looking to record a ukulele in stereo
on: September 18, 2021, 18:47:05
What do you think?

I don't see this as a common thing online in tutorials or anything.

I really want it to be on both sides of the lead vocals down the center. Instead of double tracking could I just record it once with an xy or an ortf?

Can’t really help with “xy or ortf” because I don’t know what those are... I’m also curious as to resisting double tracking... please do share your thoughts on this...

My approach would be to record in stereo ... but the difference between that and double tracking may well miss the point of your intention.

@Bill

I don't own a ukulele but wish that I did.  I'd suggest a condenser mike placed behind the bridge just as I would mic my acoustic.  Give it a go, it might sound just right1

by behind the bridge @Cool Hand  ... do you mean the section to the left when facing the player?

@Bill, that's right my friend. The strings pass over the bridge at exactly that point.

@Bill  @Cool Hand  - interesting subject.
I'd use two mics and put them in a place that simulates a person listening to the ukele from about 2 meters.
Close miking could be an interesting experiment but might sound a bit weird / unnatural.
Coinciendentally - have been listening to some ukelele music by Amanda Palmer
may be there are some video's of her perfomance being miked in stereo

@Bill  Music and video's from Amanda Palmer are indeed leftfield, and indy - but I was hoping there might be some example of mic placement for the ukelele
Did you see this clip? interesting info on Mic placement
I like the soft cotton pick he uses around 6.30 - will try that too.

Cheers
