How about a new songwriting challenge?
on: May 28, 2020, 20:40:39
I think it's time for a new songwriting challenge, don't you?

I propose " Make a Classic Ballroom Dance!"

Have you ever tried making a song like a waltz or a swing or a tango? ( and other dances Ö maybe ones from your country....) It really forces you to get your lyrics to line up rhythmically in challenging ways. I also think this challenge will help us to include those who create instrumental music.

that's my 2cents

Anyone like this idea?

Anyone have other ideas?

Post them in this thread.  :)

Hey everybody, little follow up on this subject.. I think it's time for a new challenge, long time ago!

Let's collect some ideas this week, choose the best idea together and run the challege!

My ideas would be:
-A new cover a kitchener challenge
-A new inspirational input challenge
-A new 'write a new song in a specific style' challenge

Anybody have other ideas? Post them below!!

Cheers, Love and Peace,
Mar T.

I was so fashionable late that I thought that the party would be over and the dishes done.
The 3/4 and 6/8 time is soooooo underrated, that I would overcome my natural shyness and annoyment (yes, love that word) with challenges in one guise or another.

If itís a waltz of some sort, I would definitely enter. I also made a Christmas song, didnít I?
So @Bill from November Sound Ďs idea would win me over. @Mar T.
And sorry for not responding.
Kind regards, Gus

Hey @Mar T.  and @Dutchbeat  ... you see this?
Our very own @LePlongeur  says he will join the competition if it is a waltz!
But ... will @DanJames  make an attempt at a ballroom dance? That is what I want to know.  :shinyteeth:
This is not to say that one must dance but, rather, create a song that is a dance. So many kitcheners wanted to join @JimByrne when he needed dancers.  :D  right?   ::)
I wonder if @Mora Amaro La Loba  or @Layerson  ... would try to make a traditional ballroom dance? Could they turn off some of that amzing creativity just enough to make an old-timey waltz or a tango?   ???

Great ideas you guys

Iím certainly up for a waltz or 6/8 type challenge, if itís either of them thereís plenty of room for interesting artistic choices. Dunno what direction I would choose, but Iím currently enlisted in an online course In songwriting and another in music theory (...yes, Iím actually learning to sight read, harmony and the likes...) so it would be a great way to test some new skills, but Iím not sure what Iíve actually learned.  ::)

Iím curious though, if itís possible to sing to a classical waltz and how that would sound...but Iím sure Iíve a skewed imagination and itís not what it is about

Count me in

i agree with @Mar T. ....it is time for a new songwriting challenge on this kitchen  ::thumb::

i would be very in for trying to do a Waltz or 6/8  time signature songwriting challenge, as...@Bill from November Sound @Layerson @LePlongeur suggest

i don't know whether i can do that, and whether i will succeed in trying that, but hey ... ;D ;D ;D it is a songwriting challenge right?

i think @budhabuilding building ....will also like to join this challenge...

and i think @Mo @Mora Amaro La Loba  @Marcus Nalgaber @Zedd @Rachel_D  @Michael @Leonard Scaper @Goatrelated @Jim @man of simple pleasures @Pleudoniem @oorlab @MrBouzouki @robertkc @GTB @habiTat @DanJames  @Monty Cash Music @redmando @1roomstudio @Lane @Chris Spruit @shatiks @Dakoda @Rightly @siennalittle  @Katze Konigsberg @Timothy Smith @ImKeN @Rewboat @monty_lameer @Charlie @Neal @Mylene @GreatBigThings @Susantaylor @Krysoe @MotterPaul @CGHound @Santa Claus @IronKnee @lauder @PaperMessages and many others might want to join this songwriting challenge!!!!

so @all, give a shout if... your are in,, for this ....songwriting challenge!

there is no pressure, but there ARE .....GREAT PRIZES!!!!!!   :pompom: :pompom: :pompom: (to be announced soon...)

Sure, I think it would be good to have a different set of criteria to help break out of whatever songwriting habits I have.  I have not read the whole thread yet to see if there are any rules or anything. Like who judges?

I work on Protools, was a pro recording engineer for 10 years in analog. I play compose, perform record and mix everything in my recordings.

I could be tempted.. plenty of popular 3/4 6/8 tunes out there for inspiration ...

House of the Rising Sun - Animals
Kiss from a Rose- Seal
Design for Life - Manics
Manic Depression - Hendrix
Etc etc

Odd time signatures - that sounds like fun, I'm in. Sorry @Bill from November Sound  - I totally missed your original post.
Can I tag @ProgRockDan ? - who was last seen here at 2020-01-12, but that I will spam via certain other channels, as weird time measurements is his specialty.

@Dutchbeat  - end of July? that approaches rather fast... I'd say 1st of september to give all holiday makers (wherever they may roam this summer) a chance to be off-line for the summer.

end of July, ok?

End of July is 30 days. I am good with that but we can vote if you'd like - maybe set up a poll.

6/8 is actually a very easy time signature, not that odd. One could probably take a lot of chord changes you have written before and just change the feel slightly. A lot of country songs have that feel.
