So what's the last challenge of 2018 to be?

Hi all, well the voting for the 'Same Lyrics Challenge' is now underway. All very exciting, but voting is not as much fun as songwriting! So what is the last challenge of 2018 to be?

Maybe we could collect suggestions in this thread, if that is ok with the Mods and Madministrators?!

I have one idea to kick it all off. Called 'Legends Album Pitch'. Here we look at maybe the 50 best selling albums of all time (excluding Greatest Hits). Then imagine at the time they were one track short of completing that album. And then they rang you to supply the one missing song. Could you have done it? Are you up for this high pressure task, to write a killer song in the style of your chosen legend? Well here would be your chance to fantasise!

There is a list here https://www.listchallenges.com/the-50-best-selling-albums-of-all-time

But no Greatest Hits, so for example you could pitch to Eagles 'Hotel California' album, but not Eagles Greatest Hits.

Anyhow, that's just one  idea? Any more ideas out there? Let's get them in over the next week, so we can occupy ourselves with this new topic, whatever it shall be, for the remainder of the year, - if all are in agreement that is!

Cheers all!

If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Ooooh @MichaelA , nice one! Thanks for your post!

Sounds like a great idea, but (and the Dutch always have a 'but') who says we're only going to run 1 more challenge in 2018?  ;)

My ideas:
-Run a short challenge which requires everybody to use the kitchen virtual instrument ( https://www.songwriter-forum-kitchen.com/forum/songwriting-ingredients/26/kitchen-percussioninstrument-vst-created-esp-for-the-kitchen-and-for-free/4782/ ) and using that to write a jingle for our 'Kichen radio'  (which will be BIG in 2019  ;) )
-Long time ago we did a Xmas challenge.. but of course when we do that, we'll do that with a twist.. So eg.. 'An unexpected kind of Xmas eve'..

So everybody let's add ideas!  And then we'll try to decide together when which idea will be the next challenge..
Cheers for your post MichaelA!

Mar T.

Donít know who of us is familiar with FAWM?
February Album Writing Month.
The intention is, that by entering, you promise to write a song every other day of the month.
My idea?
- every other day is for pussies; everyday would be much much better
- February being the shortest month isnít much of a challenge

A couple of years ago I did one FAWM with a friend.
She did all the odd days and I did all the even days.

A change is needed to accommodate all kitcheners who want to join. Each person claims a certain date to write a song for. With 28 (or maybe 29 next year) the month is full and more people will have to be disappointed. Our @Bill from November Sound claims the 2nd of Feb for instance.
Claiming your date is going to happen quickly because of the limited amount of days.

And we can post it as an ode to Neil Sedakaís calendar girl as one glued together item on Kitchen radio.
So, @MichaelA , if youíre still reading and if you still understand my rant and rave, this would be my suggestion.
An among us FAWM for broadcast on Kitchen radio and being an assembled piece of music by 28 kitcheners. No polling, no nail biting, just entering and enjoying.
Kind regards, Gus

Hi @Mar T. , cool if you need more jingles and need to up the profile of KR1 - that's Kitchen Radio 1, of course!  ;D

Yes @LePlongeur that's a great idea too, to have a challenge that is all about participation and not voting, but where each Kitchener is in turn given the Song of the Day privilege.

Seeing as @Mar T. also mentioned a 'Christmas song with a twist' idea, I wonder if there is enough time to organise this for December? In Europe, by the way, we have Advent Calendars, where each day from December 1st up until Christmas Day a different door or window of the calendar is opened - to reveal a Christmas image and provide a treat, maybe chocolate.

If we did a Kitchen Christmas Advent Calendar, each treat would be a song. So we would need 24 kitcheners to agree to own a particular Song Of The Day. Now that is about double the participants in the current challenge, but as it isn't a voting thing, and something of a privilege to be asked I bet many who don't normally enter would be prepared to have a go at this.

Then on Christmas Day, the Advent Calendar would reveal the whole collection of songs on a playlist!

OK, so that is another idea. Anyone think that works? Or are there more ideas out there?

It occurs to me that by the time we finish voting for the current challenge we'll be just over a month away from Christmas. I suggest that we make the next challenge the Christmas Song challenge and give it plenty of time to blossom.

What I understand of it, we are voting for this yearsí Christmas song, arenít we?
Thatís why I did a truly heroic attempt to make my entry the most christmassy of all.
Kind regards, Gus

Good point @LePlongeur , maybe after the 'Two Hearts' song we have already done Christmas.

Any other opinions on this?

If we want a non-Christmas idea, I go back to my opening post of this thread. But usually other kitcheners supply other ideas - so come on folk, don't be shy!  ;)

Ok cool! Let's collect all ideas here and we'll create a poll of competition assignments to choose from.

So far we have:

@MichaelA - 'Legends Album Pitch' and 'Xmas advent calendar (we need 24 contestants then)
@Mar T. - 'Christmas with a twist' and small 'Jingles with kitchen sounds'
@LePlongeur - 'Write a song every other day for a whole month'

Keep them ideas coming.. Let's try to decide next weekend which idea it will be!

Cheers!

good ideas by @LePlongeur , @MichaelA  and @Mar T.
I like them all, but (yes that is a Dutch cultural defect  :pompom: ) the Legendary Album Pitch seems like a Very Big Task, even Huge!
The idea of a song a day for a certain month - February in @LePlongeur 's case - reminds me of a 'challenge' a few years ago called November Hometaping. They quit in 2016 apparantly - but it was fun while it lasted https://twitter.com/hmtpng.

My loose ideas : a song about kitchen or cooking, in the broadest sense. Or a intercontinental collaboartion - collaborate on a song with somebody (not neceesarily a member yet) on another continent; Or use a random lyrics generator https://www.song-lyrics-generator.org.uk/ and work with a automatic generated lyric to work with.

And another idea - remix eachother's song. For the challenge a new song would be made, possibly around a theme, but with max 10 separate tracks. Randomly kitcheneers are to remix eachothers songs.

I like the idea of treating this present challenge as the Christmas/Winter Solstice Challenge..... @MichaelA 's lyrics certainly have that feel.

Moving on from there.....our recent challenges have dealt with how we handled creative offering from fellow Kitcheneers. Perhaps we should get back to some pure songwriting. I suggest a simple approach that is in keeping with the coming New Year rather than the Christmas Holiday.

Let's all write a song about a new beginning.

 :)

Think I'm with Lenny on this one.

Alternatively, the 'Retro Rework' was a great success this time last year. There were 15+ entrants and suggestions that it would become an annual challenge. I'd love to have another excuse to rework one my many rough demos.

keep the ideas coming  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

reading this i would like

to do a write-a-song-about-a-new-beginning challenge, so sort of a song for new year, but then combined with @Mar T. 's idea....that we try to use some of the special kitchen plugin sounds that @budhabuilding made

so a song about a new beginning of some sort in which you have to use some kitchen sound samples...type of thing.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
