Anyone here from TEXAS ?
on: December 21, 2016, 19:54:08
I'm recording a new song about Texas and would really like an honest opinion from a genuine Texan.  Is there anything in these lyrics that is inaccurate or inappropriate? Be as critical as you like.
Also, it would be brilliant if a decent singer from Texas would record the vocals 😁😁😁
Thanks for looking
GTB

Texas

We came across the prairie, we came across the sea
Texas sun burning the sky
Take the hand of friendship in the land of the free
Yellow rose and bluebonnet side by side

Chorus
Come and see the land, we'll take you by the hand
Ain't no welcome like here in Texas
Every thing is bigger here, but you don't mess with
Texas, Texas, Texas

Remember the Alamo where Texas made a stand
San Jacinto, Texan revolution
Red River Arkansas to the banks of the Rio Grande
Sent their cowboys for the confederation

Chorus

Bridge
Leadbelly, T-Bone,  Stevie Ray, singing ‘bout the flood
Buddy, Janis, Frank and Roy got Texas in their blood

Solo

The sea came in, took the land from Galveston bay
Spindletop came in beneath the dome
Ten years in the dust bowl, lone star blowin’ away
Many good Texans left their homes

Chorus
Texas, Texas, Texas to end
valar morghulis

lyrics are really good an accurate, i would love to hear the music can you post a link to the track, i have a friend that is born and raised here in Texas and is an awesome vocalist for country, Spanish, and Classic rock that i can possibly record him here in my home studio, and send the session files back to you, i have pro tools Le 7 and i can ask him and show it to him I think he would love to do it if you have the music and a melody hit me up and let me know, if i could sing i would do it, and yes i remember the Alamo that's my City San Antonio Texas cuz we down in the south and we keep it playa made ;) just got off the phone with my friend i just told you about he said let me hear the music and I'll see what I can do and if he likes the way I do it we can re record ::e-guitar3:: it again to make it sound really good... so hit me up bro, as a musician and a Spanish song writer i really loved your lyrics thanks for writing a song about The Lone Star State

Hey @GTB ...I am  Northerner.  8)

That said, I speak to a lot of folks in Texas. Those lyrics work well for me....mostly. I'm just not sure about...

we'll take you by the hand

I'll defer to a real Texan on that though.
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

Wow! I thought this post had sunk without trace but I'm really excited to see replies now. I will get my latest rough mix up on soundcloud so you can hear it @jayc , it'll be tomorrow though. It feels great to get such feedback from a genuine Texan, means a whole lot to me 😊  To get it sung by a singer from Texas would be absolutely brilliant!

It's all in GarageBand at my end but I hand them to a friend who finishes the mix in Logic.
Btw, you'll hear some wobbly backing vocals but they will be redone.

@Leonard Scaper , thanks for commenting too. That line is intended to carry some specific meaning (Texas has a very welcoming reputation), but I'll re-think it all the same.

Expect link tomorrow,
Gtb

that's great GBT, yes we Texans are very friendly and yes that part in your verse we'll take you by the hand is great, folks down here will understand what you mean, we Texans are all about family and friends so to me it sounds great i love the lyrics but i was born here and I'm Texas raised but like that old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but this is your song and that's up to you, in my honest opinion you hit dead on but everyone has an opinion but you are the writer so write what you feel in your heart, that's what a great piece of advice Spanish songwriter once gave me, and he has his own professional label but it's Texas Spanish music called Tejano and Norteno music, google it the name of the record company is called Freddie Records
here is the companies facebook link and i will post a link to the online store

@GTB

@jayc

My apologies to both of you and to Texas. One should never base their perception of the whole on just a few parts. Actually, I was reminded just last night that my main contact down there, from whom I seem to have based my jaded perception, is actually a New Jersey transplant! Go figure.  8)

Here is a better demo done by a singer I know (he wasn't happy with it but only heard it once before recording it).

https://soundcloud.com/gtbr/texas-19022017-1652

@jayc , I'll pm you a version with no vocals on as I think your singer will want to put his own infections and emphasis on it.  Feel free to vary the vocal melody a bit too and make it fit your voice, I believe if a singer 'feels' the song he/she will always add something extra to it - that's the beauty of collaborating.
One thing I've realised which you could try out if you like, is this: Where the lead & backing vocals say 'Texas, Texas, Texas', I think it may have carry more weight if the lead vocal only sang the 1st and 3rd 'Texas' but the backing vocals still do all three.
I can remove the backing vocals too if that would make it easier to sing? just let me know.  They do need recording again anyway.

Hey @Leonard Scaper , no apologies need my friend - it's good to get feedback and very welcome.

@jayc  - I'll have a listen to those tracks this evening - Mrs GTB has me refurbishing a boat for the day  ::)
