Doggerland - wip
on: June 01, 2019, 10:35:48
Work in progress, any comment welcome. Some parts of the vocals may need redoing, or remixing. So I am putting it in the collaboration section, happy to share credits and develop in the spirit of co-design.

Lyrics:
Doggerland

I have been waiting
for the rain to come.
The land was drying,
under the heavy sun.

Doggerland's sinking
into the sea,
up on trial is infinity
Doggerland's sinking
going so deep,
under the tide
from which time can leap.

But now it is raining
and the sky will fall
I didn't heed that
final stormwatch's call

So here is tomorrow
there goes today
watch it unfold
I should be on my way
playing blindman's bluff
in a hall of mirrors
in the winter cold.

I have been waiting
for you to change your mind
you should be wiser
how could you be so blind

Doggerland's waiting
to tell its tale
Whatever we do
the tide prevails.

The line "Infinitely is up on trial" is from Bob Dylan's Vision of Johanna.

Very pretty love song, @oorlab . :) I like the analogy of the love disappearing into obscurity under the forces of change.

I'll leave suggestions to others. Just want to say that I was intrigued when I saw the title 'Doggerland'. A few years ago, out of curiousity, I had my DNA tested (maternal side). To my amazement - especially as I'm a Canadian now living in the Netherlands -  I learned that my earliest identified maternal ancestor had lived on the land mass called 'Doggerland', which now lies under the North Sea. (Also learned that my DNA is 2.9% Neanderthal.  :) Apparently all modern humans - except for those originating in certain areas of Africa - carry Neanderthal DNA.)

I was immediately inspired to write a trilogy of lyrics, the second of which is called 'The Edge of Doggerland'. (Lyric 1 is set in the Neanderthal period, Lyric 2 in the late Mesolithic, and Lyric 3 in the present.)

Anyway...just wanted to share that with you.  ;) So nice that you've written a song with 'Doggerland' as the title.  :)

I like the lyrics @oorlab -the sinking land nicely linked to the relationship hinted at. Two guitars sound good (fingerpicking reminds me of John Renbourne) and your arrangements always have a loose charm that works for me.  Apart from a little more attention to the vocals and harmonies ( add a female voice on the chorus ?) the only place things lose focus is towards the end...the vocal seems to fade.
Perhaps a midi talent could come up with seascape sounds to suit the theme.

I am a huge fan of Pearls before Swine. Thomas Rapp and Elisabeth lived for some time in Amsterdam. But then again, who didn't?
Inventors of shoegaze music. I don't have all the music he made, but it's close.

In some way your very pleasant kind of music reminds me of the band and the man. And I hope you keep on doing this - volstrekt - unique thing.
If you insist on my ideas about mix etc.:

I'd lower the level of the drums. Drums are always in a sort of balance with the bass. Drums without bass seem to hang disjointed somewhere in the mix.
Of course it's an opinion, but it's my opinion.

Kind regards, Gus

Many thanks @LePlongeur  - lowering drums, and finding balance with the bass, will be on my todo list.
Don't know the music of Pearls before Swine, but will look it up :  eg :

cheers @robertkc -  John Renbourne is going to my future playlist. Focus on the vocal towards the end sure is a good tip! Any female singers wanting to sing on the chorus - most welcome.

@DonMar  - how interesting! You're part Doggerlander!! Hoping to read your lyric "On the edge of Doggerland" sometime. Nice that you view this as a lovesong, I was thinking more about a subdued protest song, but those categories are not mutually exclusive.

As I listened I was caught up by the way the guitars kind of played off each other a bit haphazardly. I liked that but I was thinking how it might sound cool if a strong bass line came in at some point. Upon a second closer listen I could hear that bass in there right from the start but it wasn't presenting to me as very bass-like.  ;)

I might consider pulling the bass out from the beginning and letting the two guitars have the stage. Then bring the bass in with good presence a bit later....maybe even around :50. I think the bass wants to live strongly in the low end to anchor the somewhat meandering guitars. Bringing it in later would establish its presence and add an interesting dynamic to the production..

Cool tune......like the lyrics.

Right @Leonard Scaper !
This is exactly what I meant about anchoring and having the other instruments flying loose in the mix.
I'll be silent from now on and let you do the talking.
(Bet I won't be able to keep my promise!)

Kind regards, Gus

I hope you meant your reaction to be in good natured fun.
Nothing about me is so long, that a gentle person like you could step on it.
Don't worry.
