That's marvellous @Mar T. , @Dutchbeat , @Rachel_D , @Leonard Scaper and @ajwvdberg !
Any others...? :)

So let us begin. I don't really know how to initiate this project, but I think we should go for different parts by beginning individually. Probably every one of us should write a melody or a theme about 30 to 60 seconds long, all in the same key and tempo.
I'd propose C major / 100 bpm. (Any objections?)
Please only produce single tracks as a start, because we want others to add stuff like instruments, harmonies and backing vocals etc... And we want to be able to mix them together with tracks of others.

I made a couple of simple guitar and piano loops, each 8 bars long. They're very repetitive and probably useless, but I'll share them anyway just to get the thing started. Maybe they can serve as an inspiration. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/884gcr9cii8omzg/AACSbZB1cJOoclf-scgRQTX6a?dl=0

Once we have our first puzzle pieces, we can go on with arranging them and ask specifically for additional tracks.

What do you all think, is that the right way to start this...? ???

Cheers,
Mark

Hey @Mark Luto just had a chance to listen to your input, that's great, very well done!!!
I think we need a little bit more orginizing here... to keep moving forward.

Would it help to:
1. Make a list of contestants
2. Assign every contestant a 'part' of the arrangement
3. Make all contestant perform a chorus together

Or something like that? Just thinking out loud..
Contextual questions:
1. What length of the final arrangement are we thinking about? A song? An Album of 1hr stitched together from the individual songs?
2. Is everybody free to submit chord patterns for verses and do we use a general chorus? Or do we all keep repeating your excellent input material and stick to that chord patterns? In that case: which pattern should we use for the verse and what pattern should we use for the chorus?
3. Do we write individual lyrics or do we start a lyric input thread to collaborate?

Again, just thinking out loud.. To avoid too much discussion and set everybody's mindset to reach the goal I think it's a good idea to provide your direction. It's your idea, I think a lot of us are interested and want to contribute, and like to follow your lead.  Shall we take your input as the start and can you think of a way to 'assign' parts of the task to the different contestants?

Again, very good idea and I love to see this initiative having a lot of success!
Cheers my friend!
:mart:

Those are excellent questions @Mar T. . I've been thinking about the same things these past few days.

1. Make a list of contestants
2. Assign every contestant a 'part' of the arrangement
3. Make all contestant perform a chorus together

1. I'll make a list of all the tracks and keep it up to date for everybody. Apart from the finished files, it will also contain draft material, announced tracks and requests.

2. We'll number the different parts when announced or received. This is just to keep a clear picture of what's going on. The parts will pretty sure be rearranged in the final version.

3. Yes, we definitely want to perform together, hopefully in many of the parts. But I wouldn't go for a returning chorus. Just keep the music changing all the time...

By the way, we're not contestants here. This is going to be a collaboration, not a competition! ;D

3. Do we write individual lyrics or do we start a lyric input thread to collaborate?

1. That depends on how many people will take part. I hope it'll be at least 15 minutes in the end. But there's no upper limit.

2. No, please don't stick to any chord patterns. Those loop files were just to give you an idea and to get the thing started. There's no such things as verses and choruses, the music should be changing all the time.

3. Both is possible. Either you write the lyrics for your part yourself, or you just put them up for discussion.

The best thing would be if people would submit material with room for additions (respectively ask the others to add stuff like backing vocals, other instruments, et cetera...)

I'll post my first part very soon. So excited! ;D

Cheers,
Mark

Okay, here's my first contribution. It could be used as an intro, but that's subject to change. Opinions very welcome...

Lyrics (Any suggestions for improvement?)

you’re in love with making music
and you write song after song
but you don't know who to share them with
I know where you belong

it’s a place where people meet
filled with music, fun and cheer
it is cosy there and heartening
and people will give ear – to your tunes

Seperate tracks in the shared Dropbox folder
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/884gcr9cii8omzg/AACSbZB1cJOoclf-scgRQTX6a?dl=0

There's also a "File Index" list (with comments) in the Dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/atomh4lfatfu703/0_File%20Index.pdf?dl=0
I'll update that list whenever new stuff comes in.

Now it's your turn @Mar T. @Dutchbeat @Rachel_D @Leonard Scaper @ajwvdberg @oorlab @CrystalSuzy and hopefully many more...

Remember:
Key is C (key changes allowed ;))
Tempo is 100 bpm

I'm looking forward to hearing your stuff! ::headphone::

Cheers,
Mark

Fabulous start, Mark. I love how you just began to build it at the end with that piano.

I see us working off the individual pieces that come before us, both musically and lyrically. At the end we could move the parts around, add parts to other folk's parts....even change the lyrics a bit to be more cohesive. For that, of course, we'll need a Mix Master.

This will be an amazing exercise in collaborative music and I bet it will be longer than 15 minutes.

Thanks Lenny! :)

Yeah, working off the pieces that are there already is a good possibility. But everybody can also start from scratch, we'll somehow fit in all the contributions anyway...

And yes, we will need a Mix Master. Fortunately, we've got a couple of those at hand. ;D

By the way, would anybody be up for adding harmonies to part 1? And I'd love to hear a real acoustic guitar instead of my virtual one...

I'll be fooling around with this over my long weekend here.....I'll get those files into a session and see what happens.

I have my 1933 Kalamazoo strung and tuned Nashville still.....maybe that will sound cool. We'll see.  8)

Wow that's an excellent intro @Mark Luto ! Sounds very nice, and this is a great starter, loved the deep piano note in the end, promises some build up will be emerging.. Very well done!

One last question:
Are we supposed to try to stick to the 'theme' (describing that special place where we share music)?

..By the way, we're not contestants here. This is going to be a collaboration, not a competition! ;D..
Ow dear, I must have still been in my role of running comps, sorry about that, of course: collaborators!!!  ;D ;D

Thank you @Mar T. !

And to answer your question: Yes, I think it would be nice if the general subject would be that merry place called "Songwriters in the Kitchen". :D

Thank you @Dutchbeat !
You don't necessarily have to add anything to this part, you can start another one in your very own and unique DB style. Just go for it!
And yes, parts like "do they know it's kitchen time" or "we are the world, we are the kitchen" will certainly just have to appear in the final product... ;D

@Mark Luto - sure sounds good - your beginning. I added some guitar and backing vocals.

have not figured if and how it is possible with dropbox to make a folder that can edited by a group - with Google Docs I know how to do that.

@oorlab Thank you Dick. Wow, you're so fast! :D

I have never done this group editing thing either, but since I want to keep track of all the submitted files and include them all in the list it's probably better if I just manage the folder myself. That way everybody can send me the files in his or her own way, and I'll add them to the folder. Okay? ;)

Cheers,
Mark
