How about a „Big Kitchen Song“ Collab?
« on: May 21, 2017, 02:03:24 »
Edit:

  THE ESSENTIALS AT A GLANCE
∙ We are making this Big Kitchen Song (working title) together.
∙ The song will be an assembly of different parts (individual styles and genres) with smooth transitions between those parts.
∙ We wish for contributions from as many people as possible.
∙ Participants can provide a whole new part as well as additions to existing parts.
@Mark Luto will collect and index all contributions and make them accessible.
∙ The parts will be numbered for clarity. Those numbers have nothing to do with the final succession.
∙ The final mix will be realised by one or multiple members. We'll have a voting in due course.
∙ Demo mixes (of parts or the whole thing) are always welcome. Please post them on your SoundCloud (or any music hosting service) and share the link here.

SOME GUIDELINES (so that everything will fit together decently)
∙ Lyrics: It is meant to be a song about our kitchen.
∙ Key: C (changes allowed if feasible)
∙ Tempo: 100 bpm (changes allowed if feasible)
∙ Format: Please submit your tracks individually and without effects (stems).
∙ Video: Some footage of you recording your tracks would be awesome. If we get together enough material, we'll compile a video.

LINKS (content will be updated regularly)
∙ Shared Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/884gcr9cii8omzg/AACSbZB1cJOoclf-scgRQTX6a?dl=0
∙ Index of the submitted files: https://www.dropbox.com/s/atomh4lfatfu703/File_Index.pdf?dl=0

Hey kitchen

I’ve been carrying around an idea for quite some time now, and I thought it's time to share it here, to see what you all think.

Maybe some of you (particularly the ones around at least my age) remember the 1990 concept album "One World One Voice". I absolutely loved it back then, and i still think it's very good music and a great idea and concept.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_World_One_Voice

Now how about making such a big musical piece together here in the kitchen? I imagine a long track that moves through various genres and styles, so all the participants could introduce themselves, with smooth transitions between the different parts.

It would of course be quite a task. We would have to agree on a key and a tempo at least, maybe even a chord progression, and i think on a theme as well. (A nice subject would be the liaison of songwriters and musicians from all over the world here in the kitchen...)

Then everybody would have to produce one ore more individual tracks, we would collect the files in a shared dropbox folder, and somebody (or a team of kitcheners) would have to mix it all together. I imagine a very cooperative process, in which everybody's ideas could be included in some way.

We could even go further and make a video of the whole kitchen making music together. Wouldn't that be magnificent? If we're good enough, we could make the kitchen famous... ;)

Well, what do you all think?

Cheers,
Mark

@Mark Luto man! I absolutely love this idea and I'd like to be part of it in the creation process, and of course I'd also love to offer all help that I can give to facilitate building/mixing the end result.
I hope a lot of kitcheners will join and when we know who's in let's discuss how we'll approach creating this monster!
Very, very good idea and I'm looking forward to contribute!
Cheers my friend,
:mart:

i am also in for this  ::headphone:: ::headphone:: ::headphone:: ::headphone::

perhaps some sort of fixed chord scedule and fixed BPM would be a good idea to start.... and a set of potential lyrics....

.if everyone who is in for this would deliver a piece of 30 to 40 seconds using that format, it must be easy (and great fun!!!!) to mix things together and combine bits and pieces from various fellow kitcheneers and kitenettes.... (just a thought)

and if their would be a need  ;D ;D ;D ;D for a DB remix of the end result.....just let me know  ;D ;D ;D ;D
I lost it...ages ago

That's marvellous @Mar T. , @Dutchbeat , @Rachel_D , @Leonard Scaper and @ajwvdberg !
Any others...? :)

So let us begin. I don't really know how to initiate this project, but I think we should go for different parts by beginning individually. Probably every one of us should write a melody or a theme about 30 to 60 seconds long, all in the same key and tempo.
I'd propose C major / 100 bpm. (Any objections?)
Please only produce single tracks as a start, because we want others to add stuff like instruments, harmonies and backing vocals etc... And we want to be able to mix them together with tracks of others.

I made a couple of simple guitar and piano loops, each 8 bars long. They're very repetitive and probably useless, but I'll share them anyway just to get the thing started. Maybe they can serve as an inspiration. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/884gcr9cii8omzg/AACSbZB1cJOoclf-scgRQTX6a?dl=0

Once we have our first puzzle pieces, we can go on with arranging them and ask specifically for additional tracks.

What do you all think, is that the right way to start this...? ???

Cheers,
Mark

Hey @Mark Luto great initiative! Thanks for organising this! I don't know if I'll have enough time to put together a partly track, but I'd be happy to sing a few lines or help mixing the project, let me know how I can help..

What do you mean by single tracks?

Maybe "seperate tracks" would have been the better expression. You are welcome to produce whatever you'd like, be it a vocal melody with a guitar accompaniment, a drum solo or a whole big band piece. But I think it would be good to have all the tracks seperately, so we can mix the different parts together into a whole new thing with smooth transitions. We don't want a bunch of finished individual songs with hard cuts in between, do we? ;)

Thanks Marti! Fortunately we're not in a hurry, are we? Apart from bringing your mixing and production skills in, I expect you to contribute some lead vocals, a guitar solo and a lot of harmonies at least... ;)

cool idea, I'd like to contribute too.
@ajwvdberg  - loose tracks, are also called loose stems, or separate stems - the individual instruments in a mix.
