Songs for children?
on: January 11, 2019, 23:16:04
I rarely talk about my day job.

I teach music to school children 9 - 10 year olds. They are excited about learning, love music, love singing and playing instruments and are excited about life. I teach in an area that needs more culture and more diversity ... we don't have the money to take them out to see the world.....but maybe I can bring the world to them like never before.

Would you be interested in singing a folk song from y our country for them?

They love trying to pronounce other languages .... you could say it and they'll echo you.

Songs like "Frere Jacques" or "Au Claire De la Lunes" sung by a real French singer ( @Buma       )   ...... would be phenomenal!

Anybody ... a song in your language ... for kids?

@shatiks @LePlongeur @oorlab @Mark Luto @Mora Amaro La Loba   @Jambrains @Dutchbeat @Mar T.  @Zedd
@Marcus Nalgaber @MrBouzouki
(I'm probably missing people to tag .... I'll take suggestions)

Nice thought @Bill from November Sound !
The first one in French.
Soufleren is a French word, adopted in the Dutch language over the centuries: Whisper
The one in the hole of the stage to help actors along if they forgot their lines: Soufleur.

There is a Dutch version too:

With more enthusiasm than craftsmanship.

Hé Ho span de wagen aan
er is nog heel veel werk hier te doen
pak toch je gereedschap
pak toch je gereedschap

And a German version too:

Niève, Irish with a Spanish name, just woke up (hour later than with us) and told me it's a Christmas song:

The funny thing is, that in France and Italy, they use identical lyrics about the wind whispering through the Pine trees. In Germany and in NL it is a getting the crop off the field song and with you (or at least in Ireland) it's a Christmas thing.

Italy:

Text for the 2nd song:

Er zat een klein zigeunermeisje
huilend op een steen
huilend huilend
helemaal alleen

Sta op meisje lief
en droog je traantjes af
en kies een kindje uit de kring
die met je dansen mag

As you've guessed, I don't have the gear to make a video. Maybe in a couple of weeks time. If you want me to sing zigeunermeisje, let me know.
Lots of luck with your project!
Kind regards, Gus

Nice call @Bill from November Sound  - will record two children songs I learned frmo my grandparents: "De zee zal mooi zijn" and "Auf einem baum der Johiko" - and post it here. I searched internet before to find these tunes, but didn't find them yet.

Why do you rarely talk about your day job? Any reason not to? Seems like a pleasant and honourable way to make a living.

What a great job you have @Bill from November Sound ... and as @oorlab has said  very "Honourable".

Well as a Yorkshireman I can think of no finer song to suggest then the Yorkshire dialect song "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at"
translated it means "On Ilkley Moor without a hat"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Ilkla_Moor_Baht_%27at

Here is a well produced mash-up featuring some famous Yorkshire-born people

I'm looking for a children-sung version if I can.

"Love and Life is all about connections"

Oh @LePlongeur the song "Hey ho" (English version) my 10 year olds (grade 5) already sing ..... they would love to learn the different language I bet!  :)
Thank you @LePlongeur , @oorlab , @MrBouzouki , @shatiks  these are great! You saved me a lot of work finding the excellent versions of the songs! You know how they should sound and there are so many not so good versions out there.

Here is what works in class .... the kids love this activity from an old music textbook CD...... a recording.

Could you make a recording audio or video?

Hi my name is [              ] and I am going to teach you the words for a [                   ] song.
Repeat after me [      ... ......in your language............            ]
[ pause]
Good! Try that again! [  ......  ..........  .......... .......           ]
[pause]

You do it in short phrases. The kids will be laughing and trying to pronounce Dutch, Yorkshire, Ukrainian, French ... they will love it!

That would be wonderful if you could do that @Dutchbeat

I'm thrilled with the response for this thread! Did you see what Shatiks  did for me already?  ( now that I'm a new moderator is there a way for me to give bulk karma points … I wonder? ) The Kitchen members are the best people on earth!

Hi @Bill from November Sound  - here two tunes freshly recorded
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/johiko-de-zee-zal-mooi-zijn/s-bWjpZ
downloadable too.
One is in German, one in Dutch. My grandparents used to sing these. I have never found any information on the interwebs - although the lyrics of Johiko have been written down, the music I never heard accept orally from my granddad (it was the only tune he knew).
I will be happy to follow up on any ideas and questions in this thread .

Wow @oorlab !  These are beautiful!
Thank you so much for doing this!

I need your help to teach the language if one of them would be do-able.

Would you be able to make an echo track for the one in Dutch -  where you say the words and have the kids echo you?

They would love it! They do love trying to speak in different languages. ( This is a real novelty in America …. I know you all speak multiple languages in Netherlands … but here it can be a real trial to get people to accept anything other than English.....)  If I start them young it can really increase their cultural awareness while they are still excited about learning.

Sure @Bill from November Sound  - I can do that.  The youngest generation in the Netherlands can speak English, but the interest in French and German is quite low, compared to the generation of my parents. For trade and being from a small country, the Dutch had to learn quite some  languages - but purely for practical reasons. We have quite a number of sea songs. In the schools of my children Chinese and Spanish are offered, those are the new global main languages.

In America, is there a Native American language / song that children can learn?
Keep them excited about learning!
