Covers
on: March 07, 2019, 20:27:58
I was at an open mic and this young girl did an excellent cover of "Go And Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber on the ukulele.

I hadn't heard the song before because I don't listen to the radio all that much, so I listened to it on the YouTube. I won't confess to "Bieber Fever", but who ever wrights his songs did a fantastic job writing this one.

Do any of you guys do covers of anyone that you would be a little hesitant to mention? -

I guess the only cover I have ever done that would fit this topic would be in my band back in 1967...we covered "Trouble Comin' Every Day" by The Mothers Of Invention
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

Hey @Vince now that you're doing open mics … maybe you can do a cover video for us? Just you and a guitar?  :)
Justin Bieber songs are fine if that's what you want to do.  ;)

@Bill from November Sound   The next time my wife has enough time to come with me maybe she can record on her i-phone  - I'm not sure how much  recording time Apple has on their phone, or the sound quality. I only cover old folk songs (they sad thing is I learned them when they were new)

BTW, if the video shakes it's not the phone, I don't pass out anymore, but I still shake like a leaf

Ok kitcheners, now I'm curious!! @Vince , @Leonard Scaper , if you have evidence, let us hear it!
I record a cover (tribute) once in a while. My last one was 5 years ago (according to Soundcloud), must have been around the time I joined the kitchen. It's a song from the band Tonic. When listening back I hear where the mix/production can be improved. Sounds really boxy.
It's called 'If you could only..'.

Feel free to share your tributes as well kitcheners!!

Cheers,
Mar T.

Most of you know I do 95% covers of pretty pop music at gigs.  :)

But ... I'm quoting this above ... because look at that first sentence  ... a ukelele at an open mic playing Justin Bieber?  Would you have been caught dead playing a ukelele when you were a teenager @Vince or @Leonard Scaper
Now it's cool main because of Twenty One Pilots I believe.
Also, even though the old timers always say things like, " kids these days only listen to music with fake instruments and electronic sounds." , actually they are very attuned to stripped down acoustic cover tunes ala Youtube channels.

Things have changed a lot.  :)

Ukes are cool ,  it's covering Justin B.  that would never have crossed my mind, so I'm  glad that  listening to the girl kind of opened my mind to stuff.  I'm pretty sure I've got a pair of shoes in my closet that's older than she is, her mom was with her and I was also thinking what a nice way to bond over something.

I was enough of a nerd in High School - back in the day learning to play a Uke would of been "icing on the cake" and I would of had my lunch money taken away for sure.

Speaking of covers, @Bill from November Sound , I stumbled across a version of Leon Russell's "Masquerade"  sung by Karen Carpenter you might give a listen to on YouTube. I think Melissa's voice would be a great match for the song.

It's a great song Vince. Fun fact, it was written by Ed Sheeran.
