Put Your Records On - live at the winery
on: September 06, 2017, 22:36:47
If any of you do facebook - we put up a little video playing live at a local winery. Just fooling around .... It was kind of a cold and rainy night this summer so we were inside. It was a gig with a slow start so before people came we just put down a few tracks on the ipad.

Bill
Songwriter, Keyboards, Arranger, Producer & Engineer for November Sound

November Sound is based on the Mother, Father & Son musical trio of Melissa, Bill & Will. I'm the father so anything I post will have my wife singing and/or my son playing percussion.

I guess it's a cajon Bill(Will) is playing ? I've been in a choir concert supported by a few musicians and the jazz trained drummer supporting us could do so much with it. It must be great for smaller intimate gigs ?

Nice picture.

Looks like a wonderfully intimate setting.

Yes @MrBouzouki .....the cajon is so much easier to bring than the drum kit and is great for small low volume gigs. The bad thing is it cuts up his fingers a bit after a long gig. I always keep some medical tape in the car so he tapes up his fingers if we have a few gigs back to back.
For these gigs he usually brings a cajon, a djembe and a snare drum brush. He can pretty much do any style with those three things.

Thanks @Leonard Scaper . It's fun. It's one of my favorite local vineyards...... that does, however, affect the tempos a bit toward the end of the gig. ;)

Very nice, relaxed performance.  :)

I could easily imagine a little tasteful fretless under there. (Tasteful, mind you. As someone who has a fretless and went through his own Nick Karn phase, I now see the beauty of restraint. ;) )

I play left hand ... might not be all that audible from an ipad recording

We did have a friend put in his own bass part after the fact.

Great minds clearly think alike. ;)

Yeah, that keyboard sound doesn't have a lot of foundational bottom, the added bass gives it a nice grounding. (I like the way the vertical video fits with the bass video -- almost like they're playing in the next room... a doorway into the recent past...  kind of a nice touch.  ::headphone:: )

I'm just noticing this today ..and I just want to clarify.....When I play left hand bass I split the keyboard and use an actual bass tone. Granted, tonally it may not satisfy a true bass player.  :)

But, I can usually trust myself to play the notes right, it works well to play in small venues as a small group, I can walk jazz changes and reharmonizations easily and played through a full range sound system it can sound pretty big.

In this video I'm using a QSC K8 which doesn't reproduce anything lower than 60khz and it is turned down pretty low because of the venue. Others may know more about the frequency response of an iPad internal mic better than I do but I believe it doesn't pick up the low frequencies all that well? I will agree that you can't hear all that much bass in this particular recording but it is actually there  ;)  it's just invisible ha,ha  :D
