Prisoner to Change
on: January 03, 2018, 04:45:16
Hello, everybody! It's been a while since I've been online, but I'll be a bit more active now! I've got a couple new sets of lyrics that I'd love some feedback on, and we'll start off with one of my favorites, Prisoner to Change. This has been one of my longest projects, spanning almost 10 months and various genre changes, but I've finally made a complete version that I feel would make a great rock/alternative rock. Have a read!

INTRO
I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
Held captive by the things once close
I can feel it putting me in tight chains
Yet I just can't let it go
(Yeah)
I'm a prisoner

VERSE 1
When your world keeps crumbling down
There's rubble strewn all around
The mess you call your mind

You try to put it back with glue
But it all keeps coming in two
You've lost it all this time

(The mess you call your mind)

(You've lost it all this time)

CHORUS
I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
Held captive by the things once close
I can feel it putting me in tight chains
Yet I just can't let it go

I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
No matter what they say I'll be
And all I really want is nothing
Nothing more than to be set free

I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
Held captive by the things once close
I can feel it putting me in tight chains
Yet I just can't let it go

I'm a prisoner
I'm a prisoner
To what I can't change

VERSE 2
You can't stop it once you start
Even if it was never your fault
It always shifts the blame

And once the pain, it starts to dull
It tears wounds into your soul
A twisted, mental game

If there was something we could only say
To make it know that we want our way
Not prisoners to change

We're tired of being ignored!
It's time that we shout 'no more!'
And be free of change's reign!

CHORUS
I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
Held captive by the things once close
I can feel it putting me in tight chains
Yet I just can't let it go

I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
No matter what they say I'll be
And all I really want is nothing
Nothing more than to be set free

I'm a prisoner
I'm a prisoner
To what I can't change

BRIDGE
Everybody keeps telling me to drop it, but
You can't drop your heart
Everybody keeps seeming to stop it, so
I guess I'm set apart

I want to be
Set free
From all of these vicious memories
Give me the key
To see me free
It's the turn of the century
Imprisonment is gonna cease

I want to be
Set free
From all of these vicious memories
Give me the key
To see me free
It's the turn of the century
Imprisonment is gonna cease

CHORUS
I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
Held captive by the things once close
I can feel it putting me in tight chains
Yet I just can't let it go

I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
No matter what they say I'll be
And all I really want is nothing
Nothing more than to be set free

I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
Held captive by the things once close
I can feel it putting me in tight chains
Yet I just can't let it go

I'm a prisoner to what I can't change
No matter what they say I'll be
And all I really want is nothing
Nothing more than to be set free

OUTRO
I'm a prisoner to what I can't change...

I can feel it putting me in tight chains
I'm a prisoner

I'm not a huge fan of verse 2 or the bridge, so I'd especially like to know your thoughts on those two areas specifically. The idea for this song came from a quote I found on social media - like most of my original songs do. It talked about being held a "prisoner" to the old things in your life that are long gone, but you just can't stop holding onto them (i.e. a boy/girlfriend that broke up with you, a friend you had to leave behind, something like that). I feel like I captured that meaning, especially in the chorus. Thoughts? Recommendations? Maybe soemone who'd like to help get this onto SoundCloud? I'll take it all!
Hey, it's cheaper than therapy.

@TheMobRapper .....I removed your post in "Songs For Review" so folks can concentrate on this one here in "Lyrics".  :)

I like these lyrics. The chorus is very strong and I like how you start with it.

How about something more along these lines for the bridge?

Everybody keeps telling me to stop
But you can't stop your heart
Everyone keeps on saying just drop it
But I need to play this part

I want to be
Set free
From all of these vicious memories
Give me the key
To see me free
and with the turn of that key
Imprisonment is gonna cease

@Leonard Scaper  Thanks for the tip! I really like the slight changes to the first part of the bridge. This new version changes the original melody I had in mind, but I think I like this new part better. As for your idea for the second part, the And with the turn of that key line replacement, I almost feel like it makes the word and theme of key come on pretty strong. What do you think? I might be totally overthinking everything.  ;)

It could work if the accent is on the right word in the performance...

Give me the key
To see me free
and with the turn of that key

That's true, actually. Singing it like that, it sounds really great! Thanks, @Leonard Scaper , for your help! If you know anyone with skills in the rock instrumental field, would you give them my name? I'm not very good with rock music yet yet, and I want this song to sound great!
