The journey has just begun ...
on: November 10, 2017, 10:01:42
Well this is a very early statement of intent. Over the last few days a few song titles have sprung to mind to follow up the story of the Lighthouse Keeper

https://soundcloud.com/mrbouzouki/lighthouse-keeper with a series of songs to make a concept album of connected music

By posting it here I'm hoping it will commit me to delivering this long-term project.

The titles of the songs (subject to tweaking) are :-

1) Lighthouse Keeper
2) Retrieval
3) Space Dock
4) The Passenger
5) There's No Place Like Home

It's quite am ambitious project for me but i do want to know what happens to him.
I'm hoping that the potentially harsh conditions of deep space, a futuristic space-faring mankind, the over-arching human emotion of loneliness, depression and alienation might act as a fertile field to plough lyrically.

The journey has just begun ... lol

The journey has just begun

Yes it has,

I really like this story, particularly in light of the fact that Stephen Hawking said recently that he thinks we only have around 600 years to leave this tired old world before it starts to become uninhabitable.

Add to that the recent discovery of a planet in the "Goldilocks Zone" of a start in the Cygnus system that has a 395 day year and is 97% the size of our Earth and your most excellent story line takes on a bit of extra meaning.

I think the concept album is due a revival. Nobody buys albums anymore and this could be a way of encouraging them to do so. Otherwise it's just like buying the first chapter of a novel!

So good luck with your journey, which I imagine is going to take quite a long time. Should provide you with much creative stimulation along the way, however.
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

I really like the idea @MrBouzouki;D

Maybe it's reigniting the flames of nostalgia for me but the idea of a "concept album", or at least a musical narrative has piqued my imagination...one could combine it with an old-fashioned "musical journey", in that it starts in one key then wanders away from that key before returning from whence it came (like Dark Side of the Moon, a bit, but the Pinkies cocked that up from what I remember).

I did jokingly say that after my degree I'd write a symphony...but maybe I will start a similar journey myself too (obviously not involving space, necessarily)... ::)

Well here is the raw, unedited output from a 20 minute splurge to set the scene for Retrieval - the next part of the Lighthouse Keeper.
There is no real structure to this in the accepted songwriting sense, more a direction of intent perhaps ?

Retrieval - Part 2 of the Lighthouse Keeper

The loneliness of the void is getting to me, under my skin
Despite all the distractions of the Lighthouse
The separation from real human contact is hollowing out my soul

I need to get away, I need to return, To where I was in life
My request has been processed,
Now all I can do is wait, ....... and wait .............................. and wait
For  a confirmation to be sent and a retrieval vessel to come

At this great distance, no rapid transport for me
The cost is to great to re-route a ship from a star lane
Instead the slow progress of retrieval , suspended between life and death
In a pod to keep my body alive

Will I dream, I didn't last time I was in a cryo-chamber
Almost frozen in time, but not in space
As the slow journey back to civilisation begins

I don't know if to laugh or cry,
A vessel is coming with my replacement
And I will take his place in the pod
Just keep working, counting down the days
Until it is time to sleep, perchance to dream

At last, the moment, my replacement in post,
He was very kind to me, the training I guess
He closes the pod, the lights they dim,
A feeling of stillness and then .....

<breath> .... <breath> .............<breath>.......................<breath>    to fade
