Greetings, Songwriters!

Hello!  Thank you, Dutchbeat, for the SoundCloud message inviting me to join.  You guys sound like a supportive community, so here I am.  When I'm working on a song (Am really slow on the production side) I'm offline, so I don't know how active I'll be at the moment, so don't boot me off too fast for inactivity, please!

A little background: I always WANTED to write songs, but trying to start with a melody never worked...BUT...in 2013, I decided to try writing LYRICS first, & it worked!!!  So I was a lyricist. But a few melodies popped out, too, so there ya go. I'm a songwriter.  ;D

I'm a hobbyist.  I'm not a singer or performer. I've sung on one song so far. (Only because it was in memory of my songwriting partner who passed away - who believed in my songwriting ability before even I did.)  It's posted on my ReverbNation/SoundCloud/YouTube pages, if you'd like to hear it; titled The Perfect Flame. (EDITED TO ADD LINK.) https://soundcloud.com/maryserra/the-perfect-flame

Why I didn't sing...it was hard to for most of my adult life. Singing voice felt & sounded strained. I just thought since I was an alto, I couldn't sing as high as most gals.  Turns out I had a thyroid goiter, eventually pressing on my windpipe!  Taking out half of it freed up some space in there!  Even with a narrow range & no breath control, singing is more fun now. And that's what it's all about for me...just enjoying the process of creating. So THAT'S why I sound like such a beginner.  Because I am!

I came to songwriting "later in the game" so to speak, but that's OK.  A career in radio/TV/voiceover production gave me just enough writing & technical skills to think I could learn this home music stuff!  Often, it just makes my head hurt, but I'm told that's because new synapses form in the brain when you learn something new!  ;D

I play a little piano & guitar (not well, I have terrible timing) so thank goodness for virtual instruments!  Also having fun playing my new guitalele (& actually play it on the new song I'm working on.)

There's lots to learn, & talking to other songwriters & musicians is so helpful for that.  Happy to have landed here!

Thank you for the warm welcome, @Dutchbeat.  And for the very nice compliments @Leonard Scaper!  Interesting that my neighbor (who is a singer) said almost the same thing about my vocals on it. Don't have the pipes to "belt one out," so thank goodness it fit the song. lol

@Mar T., you may have already seen the SoundCloud link that Leonard Scaper so graciously posted, but here is the YouTube link you requested:  .  I probably should edit my original post to include links.

Thank you for the kind words @robertkc

@Mar T.  thanks again. As a matter of fact you CAN hear more, because today I posted my new original song "I Want It To Be You" on SoundCloud, YouTube, & ReverbNation, but I'm not gonna link it here, because that seems excessive for a newbie!  But of course, I had to mention it!  ;D

I really appreciate all the support, guys!

Welcome to the Kitchen @Mary Serra .

It's interesting have somebody on here so has had a career in media, DJ, voice-over and general voice-related work crossing-over into songwriting as a hobby activity.  As far as singing goes, the issue for many people is clear diction, getting the message across. Your practised  skills in this area means you don't have to worry about that side of the process. Another area of concern for many is hearing their own voice and the dreaded microphone. Again, this won't be an issue for you.

Both my wife and I sing in a community choir and we have seen so may people find their confidence to let the music out. If you have the time, I would recommend it,  it's good for your health (endorphins produced during singing) , singing technique, general confidence and can open up a whole new group of like-mined friends.

I've just listened to 'The Perfect Flame' ... I hear a very nice, pure toned, melodic voice, and I've heard a few singers now, so have the confidence to keep on growing on that front.  A nice tribute to a friend . Just nice

Please post your a link to your new song in the 'Songs for Review' board, ideally including the lyrics, which is especially useful for our non-English members.

Hi @Mary Serra and thanks for the great intro.  ::headphone::

Always interesting to read about fellow home music producers and artists “backstories”. I think most of us are very open minded and honest so you’ll fit right in.

Cheers and Welcome @Mary Serra   - most enjoyable friendly song you have there  - https://soundcloud.com/maryserra/the-perfect-flame
What is a guitalele ? Some sort of hybrisd of a guitar and a ukele I guess...
Keep it up! - greetings from the Netherlands.

Hello @Mary Serra ... welcome to the kitchen!  :)

November Sound is based on the Mother, Father & Son musical trio of Melissa, Bill & Will. I'm the father so anything I post will have my wife singing and/or my son playing percussion.

Hi @MrBouzouki, that is good advice about choral singing. My husband has done it & really enjoyed it.  And...even voiceover tricks can only take one so far when they're new to singing. I've had to learn how to stay on mic! Singing w/expression without moving about too much was a hard lesson to learn. But producing my own music made that clear very fast. Thank you for the vote of confidence on my voice!

Thank you for the warm welcome @Layerson & @Bill from November Sound.

@oorlab hello! Yes, a guitalele (or guitarlele) is exactly that. It's small like a ukulele (& sounds like one) but it has 6 strings like a guitar, rather than 4 like a uke. It's also tuned differently (A instead of E.)  It's an easier way for a guitar player to get a ukulele sound, without having to learn how to play another instrument. Plus, it's small size makes for a great way to practice chords - much easier on the wrists, for a smaller person. Not sure I would recommend it to a big guy with large hands, though. Definitely less room on the fretboard!
