My first music video - Just Words
on: June 13, 2018, 22:55:59
Hey kitchen,

I need your opinion...

I have been experimenting with rotoscoping and a software called Studio Artist for some time now. In the process, I made my first video, which should complement my "Evergreen" Just Words (written by @Jurgen ).
The video's been online for a few hours now, and suddenly I'm not so sure if I really like it anymore.
I've been tinkering with these pictures for so long, but only now have I realized that on some I look a bit like Lord Voldemort. :-\ :o :-X :-[
What do you think? Is it too scary? Does it even fit the song? Thank you!

Cheers,
Mark

@Mark Luto ! Man!! I wish you wouldn't feel so unsure about your creations.. This is awesome imo!

A watched and listened without reading what techniques you applied to the video footage. And my first impression was this:

I see your (the storyteller's) face having an opinion about 'those words'.. Especially in the first chorus, the lighting up in color of eg your eyes give the viewer a sense of how much those words can hurt. You could consider to add some footage of whoever sends these words and the effect on the receiver. But to be honest, I think you did an excellent job to keep this 'simple' from the composition point of view (and sure probably this is technically complicated to create). To me this is a perfect video and it adds to the intensity of the message in the song.
About the song.. man.. everytime I hear this track (and I've listened/enjoyed this since you won the cover comp with this amazing cover of one of @Jurgen 's songs back then) my body gets covered with goose-bumps. What a beautiful song.
What an awesome production / complete package with this clip decorating it.
So I'm glad you shared the result with us, I'm sure we all will keep you from being insecure about what you create. Because I'm sure that's not necesarry at all!
Chapeau, congrats, magnefique..!

You‘re such a darling @Mar T. ! Thank you! :-*
And I guess you‘re right, I have a tendency to be a little insecure about my stuff. That‘s why I need this kitchen so desperately. :D
Your benevolent review is highly appreciated!

The video is now on YouTube as well.

I think this is incredibly good.....both the video and the song. It is starkly emotive and really sticks hard. I have never seen anything quite like it. I just posted it on my Leonard Scaper Facebook page where I have never posted anything other than one of my own songs.

"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

Since we are all in favour of 'pointers' now, well this would be better if you changed the singer to say Robbie Williams and added a cameo from Kylie in the middle!  ;D

Sorry @Mark Luto, I am in a silly mood this morning on account of lack of sleep!

All your fault, however, I first watched this last night when a little tipsy and felt it was like being sung to by a ghost or other worldly creation. Then I actually dreamt about this ghost in the night, so it certainly had an impact on me!

In the cold light of day - second viewing - my overall conclusion is that you have created a beautiful piece of art with this video. The animated character - an essence of you - seems so vulnerable and is communicating with a depth of feeling that you rarely see in videos these days. I love these single face to camera videos anyway - for example Sinead O'Connor on 'Nothing Compares To You' - or the Miley Cyrus visual copy of that, her 'Wrecking Ball' Video. The supplementary animated effects you have employed here add to that so well, with all their variations of light and shade, colour, texture and darkness. It really is a stand out piece of multi-media work especially as that one-to-one visual delivery drives home the heart and soul of the already dramatic song itself, really punching home its chasmic depth and beauty. The animation technique reminded me a bit of Raymond Briggs, which can't be bad!

In another forum (non-music related) I visit, there is a thread called 'Important Posts You May Have Missed'. There, the very best writing of the posting contributors is featured - just maybe one or two of the best posts a month. If we had that feature in the Kitchen, I would definitely expect to find this thread, or your video/song posted there. It's a gem of distinction and deserves to be highlighted for longer! I do hope more people see it!

And good luck with your social media career. I am sure @Mar T. 's mom and sister will get this moving, ha ha!   ;D
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

I enjoyed watching your video @Mark Luto   I always like to have something to watch when listening to a song.  My videos use vacation pictures and scenes, but this is thoughtfully done.

Hi @Mark Luto

This was such a great surprise for me to see this - I got an email alert from Twitter after  @Mar T. twitter post - so the word has spread to Australia.

The video is really powerful - you are very brave to do the face to camera and it creates something very moving. As @MichaelA says, it's shows something vulnerable which is what the words were about (for me at least). A sense of frustration, vulnerability and sadness which your video really captures.

This is a great - so don't change it!!

cheers

Really good video @Mark Luto!! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would like to second the comments made by others about your expressiveness and bravery at going for the dreaded "headshot"  :o.  The effects work really well at reflecting the different colours of the music and I found the whole thing a pleasure to watch (the music being great doesn't distract from the enjoyment either!).  ;D

Top drawer stuff as @MichaelA suggests!

(Apologies for not being here much, I have been lurking though  :-[)
