Title: Original songs or covers?

When you first started to play, did you learn how to play well known songs or immediately start to write your own?  :)

I started with well known songs like House of the rising sun or Mrs Robinson but never reached a level I was happy with.Round about 4 years ago I start to write my own songs.

When I started to play the guitar, I was still in the 'bleeding fingers' period when I realized it's much more fun to make stuff up than to play what others wrote before  ;)

Before that, I did first learn to play well-known songs, on other instruments which shall not be mentioned here   ::)

I've officially been writing songs for the last 31 years.  I immediately set about writing from the moment that I picked up a guitar - I've never really been interested in learning established songs though inevitably, I've learned one or two over time.  Songwriting taught me how to play the guitar. More importantly, it taught me what not to play as an instrumentalist.  I read Steve's advice about not wasting a note and that is something I try to live by in my productions.  A note is there if it is needed - it has to communicate something in a production!  :)
