Title: Groetjes allemaal!
Post by: DonMar on March 29, 2019, 12:58:14
Hello Kitchen People.  :D

Lovely to see you all. ;D

I'm a Canadian, living in the lovely Netherlands. Mainly a lyricist (who occasionally comes up with melodies), dependent on musicians/vocalists to give life to my words.

I write lyrics in a range of genres.

I hope to participate by commenting on/reviewing othersí lyrics/songs, and by posting my own lyrics for constructive critique.
Iím also  interested in collaborating with composers/vocalists.

You can hear some of my work, as well as instrumental versions, on Reverbnation.
https://www.reverbnation.com/artist/donnamarilynrichblend

Background: Journalism/English literature/Education. Mainly wrote short stories and poetry, but about 12 years ago I felt compelled to begin writing lyrics. It seemed crazy, because I didnít/donít play an instrument, and knew no musicians at the time. But there was the InternetÖ  ;) Iíve ended up with a boatload of collaborations Ė though I cringe now when I read some of my early lyrics.  ::)

In a nutshell: Words have always played a major role in my life.

I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Hello, Donna....and welcome to The Kitchen. I just took a short trip through your music....very nice stuff. I see what you mean about words. You also seem to surround yourself with some very good players.

I look forward to seeing your comments here.

Thank you, Leonard.  :)

(Yeah, even my intro is wordy. :D )

Indeed, I've been blessed to have worked with several wonderful musicians along the way.
(And I've heard fine ones here as well.)

Greetings @DonMar and welcome to the Kitchen.

We have other people on here who are principally lyricists like @smajor and others who's job's involve words, languages etc.

Collaboration is always possible on here and sometimes they are quite an unexpected co-joining of styles / influences at times.

It's never to late to start with an instrument.  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Picking out melodies on a keyboard or strumming a uke  are relaxed ways ways into connecting words with a melodic sketch. I feel the influence of a melodic journey can be a real asset to a lyric writer.

Great to have you on board. Pull up a chair ... the kettle is boiling.

Thank you for the welcome, @MrBouzouki. :)

I do look forward to some collaborative work here.

Regarding an instrument: Indeed,  wish I'd learned something like guitar or piano in my youth. A couple of years ago, I took a serious stab at learning guitar, but it simply didn't gel. (Ironically, a brother and a sister of mine play beautifully, and all by ear - never had a lesson.)

Then I bought a good keyboard, thinking I'd have better luck with that. I did manage to plonk out a couple of nice melodies - note by note - that a collaborator used, but eventually I decided it worked best for me to simply sing a melody (if I had one) into Audacity. And my collaborator had the option to use it, enhance it, or discard it. Generally, though, I leave the melody up to my co-writer, who sends me an initial draft, and we look at it together.

I think at this stage, life is too short for me to try to learn an instrument.  8) I wouldn't have time to write lyrics, which is my main love. ;)

Hi @DonMar , groetjes terug en welkom in onze internationale keuken!

Listening to 'If I were a sailor', sounds awesome!!
I'm mainly a song creator/singer, but I have a lot of trouble writing english lyrics.. So if you have lyrics to share maybe we can collaborate!!

Besides that, most important is that you feel at home in our kitchen. Lot's of brilliant, unique and funny people here.. Enjoy your journey!!

Groetjes,
Mar T.

So pleased you like ĎIf I Were A Sailorí. Itís one of my own favourites.  :)

Iím sure weíll have a chance to collaborate. Your vocals are very pleasing.
Do you favour a particular genre (or genres) for composing?

Hello Donna !!! Welcome to the forum.
I am happy to meet you here. It's wonderful women appear and join this site to dream.
I am Spanish, I live very close to Madrid but in the countryside and I see that you are also on the European ship ... We will sink? hahaha, I already know how to swim !!

Goeiemiddag!
The more the merrier and the more diverse the more fun.
So I am glad you joined.
The reason that I would like you to listen to my music here, is that I play guitars in open D, and in a couple of other deviant tunings.

In your case having an open D tuning guitar around can be very handy. Rudimentary or not, you will be able to seek the kind of structure you hope to fit your words around.
This is the simple way to cut corners. I am a writer, not an instrumentalist. Play guitar with one finger (I know there are smarter ways to treat an instrument.

Try it and youíll have all the back bone youíll need for your songs. Plus the less you doll up the backing, the more interesting your singing melodies ( is that English???) have to be.

Iíll listen to your music some time when I have headphones with me.
Sorry about that.
Welcome! How about this for being wordy? Shall we write a song: talk wordy to me?
Or is Dutch humor still a bit out of your league?

Kind regards, Gus

Thank you, @Mora Amaro La Loba, Iím pleased to be a part of the female contingent here.  :)
And yes, Iím also on this European ship, which is indeed in troubled waters at the moment. ;)

Thank you too, @LePlongeur. Iíll try to track down a couple of your songs so I can hear that open D and the one-finger playing. I'm intrigued. ;)

Hey welcome @DonMar - that's great, to have a Canadian from Delft joining.
Do you also write in French?

Listening to The Dreeman Tree  - great country ballad.  Even the name of the musician, Rusty Blake, fits the atmosphere :-)

Bon chance!

Cheers @DonMar , yes I loooved that track! Both for the music and the lyrics..
Thanx for the compliment about my vocals.. I'd be happy to create a song together with you!
I don't have any particular genre, imo 'labeling' genres is like 'putting things in boxes', not good for the creative juices ;-)
I sing, play a bit of guitar and keys, I mix/produce a bit and I have a wild imagination musically. I do like EDM, Rock, Ballads, Rock-ballads, R&B, Jazzy, Soul, Pop, Disco.. almost everything. So if you have a nice set of lyrics (or a collection) I'd be happy to see what comes up... Let me know ok?
Again welcome, and I hope you enjoy our songwriting/cooking family!
Cheers!

Thank you, @Bill from November Sound. :)

@oorlab, yes, Rusty did a wonderful job with 'The Dreeman Tree'. His voice and guitar are perfect. (The lyric has a special meaning for me, and I was thrilled - and moved by - Rusty's musical interpretation.)

@Mar T., I have no doubt we'll work together on something. ;) I'll be posting lyrics for critique from time to time, so perhaps you'll see something you like. And of course I can contact you if I think I might have something of interest. I've heard one of your songs here, but do you have a selection on a site like Soundcloud or Bandcamp, or wherever?
