Title: You start a song and it turns into something else?
Post by: Bill from November Sound on October 27, 2019, 15:41:49
Does this ever happen to you?

You have a vision for a song. You know what kind of a song you want it to be. It just kind of turns into something else.....  ::)

Maybe this is because of my situation where I don't sing my own stuff?  ???

I was specifically trying to write a happier/love song that used imagery that would relate to where we live here in New England. The song doesn't sound happy anymore. I'm struggling with the chorus. It's nothing like what I had envisioned ..... but it still kind of sounds good.   :-\

I absolutely know the feeling! You start taking a song in one direction, musically, and end up somewhere totally different without knowing how it happened...  :D

Maybe this is because of my situation where I don't sing my own stuff?
I can see how that could be one of the reasons.
Any kind of collaboration on a song usually produces exactly that effect for me. Add another creative mind and the result will differ from what you would have come up just by yourself.
Personally that is exactly why I love doing collabs, though.

Would you care to share that specific song you were mentioning with us? Or is it still too much of a work in progress?

I agree with @Michael ......collabs will tend to be that way. Pretty much everything you do is a collab @Bill from November Sound , right?

I pretty much only collaborate with myself....but that can be tricky too.  ;)

My stuff generally starts with a guitar riff that speaks to me of a particular emotion but that often gets turned on its head by the time the lyrics start presenting themselves.

HI @Michael  ... I probably can find like a live video or something .... we've been trying it out locally.
Hi @Leonard Scaper  .... so when you start a guitar riff and you want it to be a song  .... then it gets turned upside down ... you're fine with that?  You just go with it?

Ha, I got that waaaaay too often but on my side it's more like that just the genre changes. For example I also write Heavy-Metal stuff which I change to orchestral in the end again. That's why I wasn't able to post any useful metal song till now.
I think it's a great thing if a collab gets you into a different kind of feeling. It can help to see things differently and get a new sense in writing.

A good example are songs that are rewritten as orchstral pieces or actually played live by a symphonic orchestra.

Besides all I'd be happy to help in writing as long as it doesn't include the lyrics -> (I can't write lyrics  )

Absolutely. With me, the song rules. I honestly never really write anything. I wait to see what....shows up.  ;)

I am always composing as I record so nothing is set in stone until the very end

Heyy @Bill from November Sound  , given that many a time my songs are a reflection of my moid/feelings,
I do experience something similar too, when either:

(a) I am trying to write a song that goes against my current mood (e.g. when trying to create a happy song when I'm in a sadder mood (or vice versa);
Or
(b) when I stop writing a song and continue working on it after a number of days, and it takes a new meaning

In case of collabs I guess it would help if you all agree on the general mood of the song beforehand and make a collaborative effort to stick to it (if it is considered important for that particular song) otherwise I guess it is natural that it easily morphs into something new when creating as a group.
