Title: Sinds jaar en dag...
Post by: Charlie on March 19, 2020, 16:37:14
Some more syrup for the soul... A lifetime ago I made a translation of Reinhard Mey's 'Wie vor Jahr und Tag'. The Dutch singer Liesbeth List was thinking of including it in her repertoire when Mey came to our surprise with his own Dutch version. This made Liesbeth List abandon the idea.

I now consider a homespun recording of my translation a tribute to my consort, my tower of strength, with whom I have shared the sweet and the bitter for so many years.

Mijn geluk, jouw naam blijft hetzelfde woord

@Charlie  - great ! What a good piece, I know this tune but didn't know about the Reinhard Mey or Liesbeth List connection.
Your version is superb, hat off.

Beautifully performed @Charlie . And Google translate has shown that this is indeed more sweet syrup for the soul.

Thank you so much @oorlab, @Leonard Scaper and @Dutchbeat for your very kind words. The song has been approved today by RouteNote and will be on Spotify in probably a few days time. That for me completely new venue inspired me to record some of my old stuff with the abilities I have now with my DAW.

A very strange coincidence. My mother and I used to sing the Dutch version with an American accent. A bit like Donald Jones, posted here about a week ago.

I like your version a lot, although the lyrics are less 'flowing' than Reinhart's. Or maybe it's just my imagination/memory.

A great achievement @Charlie !
Vriendelijke groet, Gus

Nice to know @LePlongeur that my song brought you back in time on the sound of the nation. Intruiging, picturing you and your mother in the kitchen (why not) singing a Dutch translation of a German song with an American accent... :)  Reinhards own version became popular indeed and it is in its own way and right a very attractive translation. Himself singing here and there grammatically weard Dutch lines with a soft German accent was certainly part of his success. And if he did that 'met het oog op morgen' than his success became almost eternal.

Beautiful work @Charlie   !
Since I'm subscribed to your YouTube I found it that way before even noticing this thread …… honestly I just came here and checked because if you hadn't posted it in the kitchen I would have asked you to.  ;)
Can't say much regarding the language …. oh well …. the language of music is what I get.
Good show!

Off topic, sorry @Charlie
@Leonard Scaper
My suggestion would be to go and try deepl translator. I use them for Catalan, Spanish and Russian. And to make sure I don’t blunder too much from Dutch to English now and then.
Far more accurate and with an eye for eccentricities in a language than Google.

Straight from our eastern neighbors so accurate but expect no improvisations. If it were Japanese, the improvisations would be worse.
OK not politically correct
But merely stating a fact

Food for lyrics....
Kind regards, Gus

Wow, Bill, how nice to meet one of my subscribers. Thanks for your support. You sparked my day which became even better when Spotify approached me to pitch this song to their editors with a view to getting playlisted. I hope they do because that makes all the difference.
