a nerds only topic.....

« Last Edit: August 04, 2016, 20:54:28 by it must be me, Dutchbeat? »
thank you for clicking on this topic anyway  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was wondering with only 12 notes in the octave is it possible to come up with a song / a melody that hasn't been tried or used yet
and found this nerdy (but also very informative) video with some good links to other music sites, and nice things:

me, myself, and Pie

As a geek I really loved watching this vid @it must be me, Dutchbeat? ! The story matches completely to my perception about this subject, but raised some 'eureka' moments while watching.
I can recommend this to everyone! Thanks for sharing my friend!

@MartiMedia, thanks, i think that especially in the second half of the video there are some interesting and fun links.

In fact i stumbled on this video because i was looking for why there are twelve in an octave (and why only twelve), and that was based on all kinds of mathematical reasons and of course on which combinations of frequencies harmonize well together

.....it looks like you and I are the only nerds out here

Just watched the video, cool stuff!
But just imagine, someone actually took the time to calculate all those rather useless trivial facts   ;D
Whoever did it, should be invited to join the Kitchen  ;)

I've really not sure about this chap's approach to the "how many songs can be made" topic.  ???

He's starting from a viewpoint of how many possibilities are there for this digital format...but music is not necessarily digital, it just tends to be these days.  Moreover, it really misses the point about what music needs to be.  His analogy is a bit like saying: how many credible works of art can I display on my monitor which contains millions of pixels.  Well if I change one bit of one pixel then that pixel's just going to change colour, which quite frankly no-one's going to notice (even if the new colour is a bit out of place, which it might not be).  The same is true with a digital representation of sound - the worst that will happen with a one bit change is maybe a tiny click, and even that's unlikely with just one bit.  I think he misses the point (although he does go there at the end, but seems to think it's a convention more than anything, which isn't quite right), that music needs to satisfy certain criteria of moving between consonance and dissonance in order to create recognisable music structures, and to return to my analogy, in the same way that an image needs to create the impression of light and dark and space (apart from maybe the most abstract art) in order for it to "work".

That's not to say that the realisation of these musical (or visual) shapes can't be varied and reconstructed almost endlessly, but if the essence of the music is boiled down (as happens in my previous reference to Schenker, in the plagiarism post) then things are fundamentally quite often the same.  In the same way, to return a last time to my analogy of a monitor, that we can say that this is a picture of a man or a cup or grove of trees, and changing the value of one or even many of the bits of data there won't change the subject matter or the feeling the picture imparts.  ;)

I'll stop now.  :-[

Agreed @Michael ! Find him!!  ;D ;D ;D

Great point about the first half of the video @jim , I was wondering the same when watching (what if we'd take 96kHz 24bits resolution as medium, does the number of possible songs raise exponentially?). I don't think so..

I think he misses the point (although he does go there at the end, but seems to think it's a convention more than anything, which isn't quite right), that music needs to satisfy certain criteria of moving between consonance and dissonance in order to create recognisable music structures, and to return to my analogy, in the same way that an image needs to create the impression of light and dark and space (apart from maybe the most abstract art) in order for it to "work"..
That's exactly what he missed imo as well! Haha we don't need you to stop now jim.. I think this really contributes to how we think about music, I love this subject (thumbs up @Dutchbeat !) and your reasoning here!

I think my brain may go into meltdown if i attempt to watch this video, judging by the comments. @jameshargreaves tries to refer to notes as numbers when discussing what I should sing in a song....I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

Hahaha, @man of simple pleasures and @acoustic-alice , you two just want to distance yourselves from "nerds only" - topic  ;D ;D ;D

I am pretty sure you both watched the entire video, and checked all the calculations in it  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I used to listen to lectures about the history of musical notes from my senior in music
The musical notes that we know now are actually not the original version, it's been modified
I forgot the whole story..., hahaha  ;D
If you listen to musical notes in different culture like Middle East, you will realized how different their musical notes are compared to Western European
musical notes.
