Shifting to a new forum host would not be very disruptive at all, and I think a reliable host would be a better option than using forum software on a private server. If you go the private server route you have security issues to always be concerned with, back up of data, upgrades to software, cost of server etc... With a host all of that is taken care of.

Having said that if it is decided to go down the private server path then I have a server I would be preoared to make available.

Hi Allan, thank you for sharing your thoughts and your suggestions! Yeah, I would say a reliable host (with backup services) is the best option too, we'd be able to handpick a good forum software (like YaBB) and just install it, configure it and run it! I think everybody will appreciate your offer to make a private server available, but I agree that would cost you a lot of time keeping it up-to-date, and in that time you could be producing music as well!
For the continuity of the kitchen I think the reliable host is the best alternative.
But of course we'll have to know the opinions of the other users in the kitchen, so does anyone else have thoughts about this subject to share?
Btw, does anyone still experience the kitchen 'acting weird'? I didn't notice any problems today..

I haven't had any problems getting in for at least a couple of days, so maybe it's all fine for now :) :)
