Growing up
on: October 08, 2013, 16:05:09
I was told it was time I grew up and ditched my Ibanez electric and moved on up to something classic...like a Tele or a Strat. I have a significant birthday coming along in the next few years but not sure I can wait...but...what I really want is a white Gibson ES355, or maybe a vintage Les Paul...but there again I don't think my Ibanez sounds too bad with the EQ/FX...so I could just save the thousands I haven't got to spend anyway...

I have a guitar which i bought over 20 years ago when i first tried to learn and gave up after a few months. When i started again about 4 years back I wanted a Les Paul, so i said that if i stuck at it for a year i would buy one. So i did. The thing is, i find i still play my old guitar more. I don't know why, but it's like an old friend - an old school mate. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the LP, but the old Aria Pro 2 just feels so much more at home in my hands.

My advice; if you can, make sure you do a lot of trying, before you start buying. The ES355 does look awesome though.

Good advice Digger, if I may add one further thing take your amp with you because soundwise its the two working together that matters. I spent a lot of time and money swapping a guitar and then the amp sequentially - not the best move.

Sciencebase = Mind you a 335 droooool  Go on you know you're worth it.
Moreover being light its great for your back as you get older too, so you can justify it on medical grounds!

BTW if just saw an Orange Twin identical to the one I had at Uni on sale for ?2000 in denmark street which i part exchanged for a tranny amp I still have worth probably ?150 max oh well....

Hi science base,

Great advice from both Digger and Neil.

I've owned so many guitars, both electric and acoustic - sold many of them too. The only one I regret letting go was my American Fender Telecaster, it was like an old friend. I didn't think I'd muss it, but I certainly do.  It was however a heavy guitar - something to consider if you decide to eventually buy one.  I think once I make my mind up to buy a new guitar, I find it hard to resist the urge - guitars are such beautiful instruments :)
