Hardly ever spend time with the missus - she's not interested in my music. Mind you, is that really a negative or harmful?

It is expensive - or was. Gear lust strikes very often - but i'm learning to fight it.

Makes it hard for me to sleep as i have ideas whirling around my head most of the time.

Makes me want to go to Germany.

Makes me not want to work.

The list goes on.

Hmmm? the negative impact of songwriting aye? I always thought of it as a positive hobby, but I guess if I really think hard...let's see :)

1. I don't get the physical exercise that I should

2. I stay up far too late working on a song

3. I'm in my own little world, far too much of the day

4. My house is quite often a mess

5. I often skip meals, because I'm engrossed in writing or producing a song

6. I'm often late for things

7. I sometimes, neglect my relationship

8. I spend too much time in front of the computer

9. Sometimes I can't fall sleep because thoughts, lyrics, ideas won't stop going on in my head

10. I think I need help!  :o Where's Dr Stylus anyway?  ;D ;D

For me I find that songwriting, and more so the ability to share on forums, has become an unhealthy obsession. I agree with other comments about neglecting relationships and being in my own little world, struggling to sleep etc. I am happier when I am distracted and busy doing other things, yet like an addiction I always seem to relapse and drift back in to it. I don't like that part of me. I often consider deleting my accounts and breaking free from the whole thing altogether. I am currently finding it hard to draw any positives from any of it.

Sorry to be so negative but that's how I've felt for a while now. :(

Blimey, Habitat.

Sounds like you need a break and some time to ponder why you do it. It's only ever been for fun for me - and has simply replaced the big void left by stopping playing cricket, which took up hours every week. It's just an outlet for all the rubbish that's built up inside over the years. Then i got a different muse, and she inspires me in different directions.

It is somehow reassuring to know that we all "suffer" the same ails though.

I think it's all about finding a healthy balance  :) :) but I personally can't think of a better obsession than creating a piece of art  :) for me it's so stimulating...

it's fulfilling in a way like nothing else :) but don't worry Hab...we all go through down times and dark nights and that's OK :) I got a little obsessed with the forum when I first joined

I was exhilarated to find like minded people who actually wanted to listen to my songs and share theirs as well :) it was a lonely hobby until I found the forum,

but I found I was spending more time listening and reviewing, than working on my own songs, so had to pull back a little :) :) its' all good  :)

wow, i posted this a bit as a joke, but there seem to be real downsides. For me at the moment it is all positive, songwriting for me is a relaxing hobby, but yes it does take up a lot of time and can become obsessional, but even that part i think is nice  ;D ;D ;D ;D Well at the moment it is for me, i agree it can vary from time to time

I seem to have lost all interest in music.  Haven't written or produced for months - even knocked the open mic nights on the head.  I've thrown myself  into work, attending the gym and generally all things non musical.  Not really sure if I'll write again - perhaps when I'm compelled to.  Music has probably saved me and been detrimental to my life - I just think it's time for me to walk a different path for a while.

Hope you're all doing well!

 Hey Paul,

'Que Sera Sera' my friend ;D ;D ;D

Hope you can still find the time to 'pop' in and give us the benefit of your opinions, and VAST knowledge
of music making......after all, you might have decided not to produce any music for the time being.  But I
doubt if you're going to stop listening to it. ;D ;D ;D  And, I for one, have great respect for your opinions
 and advice............

My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend.....and I sincerely hope you find what you are looking for.
(mmm song there somewhere ;D ;D)

Take care mate....and may the God of Goodness shine on your house. You are a true 'Lion of the Mountains'  ;D ;D ;D

Big Bin Bear Hug for you ;D ;D ;D

We defo miss your tunes, WD, but you gotta do what feels right for you :)

As far as harm goes: sleepless nights because you shouldn't take time off for your music, but you do anyway.
So then you have to work the night shift to catch deadlines... :p

Steve and Sienna, thank you so much for your supportive posts - they mean so much to me!  :).

You know, I'm bound to return to the forum one day (hopefully, I won't leave it to long).  I've been listening to some of my favourite performers over the last couple of days: Justin Currie, Roddy Frame - both very inspiring. I think a break and also listening to quality performers that you respect and aspire to be able to write as well as, can provide you with great inspiration. I hope I eventually get around to writing something new and am able to post again. I've got a huge back catalogue of unheard stuff that I'm proud of but need to regain a certain sparkle by presenting something fresh.

Very best wishes to you both.  :)

Paul
