Inspiration

Hello all :shinyteeth:   Just a question I thought I'd throw out there...at moments when you're creativity is in the grey, what do you do to reignite the spark?
Do what makes your heart sing :)

Hi @Kellyanneg - personally I do something else :-)

For as long as it takes.

Then often like buses they all come at once and I have a mad time for a while. I've tried forcing song writing before and it's never been that successful for me.

The something else is often understanding music theory better, understanding recording better, getting my playing chops up to speed etc.
That way when inspiration returns I'm better able to act on it.

Some of my best ideas have come when I've been mowing the grass, or washing the dishes or something like that.
The brain is disconnected doing mundane tasks and perhaps it leaves the door open for an idea to creep in.

Good question

I put a guitar in my hands and completely clear my mind.

@MrBouzouki yes I know what you mean about how it comes by the buses, then I hear crickets.  ;D.  Improving in other areas during the quiet season is an excellent thought..i put off what i dont like - the technical stuff! I must face my fears lol. And creativity shows up when it feels like it. I have often wanted to get out of bed to record what keeps my mind from settling down, but hate to disrupt the family. @Leonard Scaper yes I sometimes sit and play randomly, waiting for a spark to come out...it's relaxing at least.

hi  ;D @Kellyanneg
this happens for me too often and i agree that i can never force songwriting because it never turns out genuine
i usually find myself falling into the same old habits of melodies and chords so i try to do some really unique and crazy chord combinations and see if i can find a tune i like or something i can add words to
and if that doesnt work i take a breather and ideas also come to me when i least expect :)
i'll have to whisper-sing song ideas, while my roommates are sleeping, into my phone to save and fix for later before they leave my head lol

@Kellyanneg
If you promise you wonít laugh, Iíll tell you.
Do yourself a favor and check what I say to be true.
Please.

Everyone in love, in sports etc makes his/her own happy hormones. If you make music, itíll happen to you. When you chose a time that is convenient, everyday the same time, your brains expect an influx of happy hormones.

Everyday softly humming/singing at the same time with something to record it with, will get your creativity up in no time.
Please tell yourself that musicians are the only people who wait for inspiration. Not one of my friends, busy with other things like painting, chopping at stones, designing dresses are in the business of waiting. They take a mug of coffee, tea and get to work. God has other problems on his hands, so itís up to us.

And the more happy hormones the better. And the more happy, the more music.
Donít suffer for your music, celebrate it.
Self doubt and self criticism are the things that slowly kill your music.

Ask yourself to be ready to kick ass and have a recorder ready.
Please give it a try. You owe it to yourself.
The only way for that next great song to happen is to go after it and get it.

The world famous Johan Cruyff said: if you donít kick the ball, you wonít score.
For music itís not much different.
Kind regards, Gus

@LePlongeur I like that! And it makes sense..my music time starts in the morning, almost every weekday morning. Most of the time when I go to bed I am already looking forward to getting up to begin.  So, we should chose to be active, not reactive, waiting. Be a songwriter, don't wish to be. I'm sure those pro writers can't say "not feelin' it today, I'll call ya when I'm back in the game."  Excellent share!

Ahhhh....., Iímglad you Like it.
Right now, Iím coming home fromvisitingDe Koe, a Dutch cafť with an open mic on every Tuesday night.
So iíve Been talked to by people one third my age or less.
And I donít regret for a moment that I had to travel two hours to listen to them.

So if I say you are bomb full of talent, Iím murdering the language, but Iím sure youíll understand.

What I mean is, that I am sure youíll stand out in every crowd.
Treat your music like a photographer would: shoot as much as you can and cherish the best you made.

Along the way, youíll lose your fear of lesser songs.
If I do my arithmetics good enough, and filtered out the lesser songs, I will have written in the region of 1.000 good songs.  The past 10 years. I donít show it, but 8 am full of modesty too.

Now, what do I care about the lesser songs? I would gladly make another thousand songs and keep the 350 to pass the test.

But all in all, i think you are doing well.
Very well.
If youíd be my daughter, I would be very proud.

Check your ideal Ďopení time.
Go to bed a little earlier, if that means you can have your Ďbestí writing time.
Donít let crap destroy your happy hormones time. Because:
If itís somebodyís birthday (and it is somebody you care about) go and help blow the candles.
If itís not THAT important, claim your 1í5 hour of happy hormones.
And your 1í5  hours of music. The rest of the 22í5  per 24 hour per day is theirs already.

So you are not selfish. You are simply being a songwriter.
And I am not the only one to think Iím glad that you are.
Ok, good enough already.
Please think about it.
Kind regards, Gus

@LePlongeur well, you have no idea how kind and valuable those words are. Thank you.  I would've loved to hear my father say those things at some point in my life.  Sometimes mere words can hit the heart like a home run.  I love feeling inspired...those happy hormones as @MrBouzouki mentioned. And working on other factors -  the theory, recording, etc are very necessary ingredients to our creations.  The thoughts and advice here are awesome! You guys rock.  @Mar T. a challenge!?   Aaah!!  :o

You know..... That's a pretty good a answer, really. Sometimes just having that deadline can inspire you to make things happen.  :)
To often with us home music maker types we never finish because we have "all the time in world".
