Liverpool Expereinces for musical visitors
on: June 24, 2019, 15:29:19
My wife and I have just had a great weekend with friends over in Liverpool doing Beatles stuff etc.
The Reconstructed Cavern was very loud and very busy.

For the Beatles stuff we used a company called Fab Four Taxi's, the  tour going to all iconic sites, very knowledgable driver would could let you get behind the hype. Very interesting as a songwriter understanding what influences in their lives might have inspired some of their work.

www.fab4tours.co.uk/

We also went to "The British Music Experience" which we were really impressed with. Lot iconic 'stuff' on display from all era, costumes, instruments etc.

If you are ever up in 'Scouse' land I would heartily recommend one or ideally both of these.

One of my brothers is a big Beatles fan and has always wanted to visit there.

I've always thought it funny that the Beatles coming from the working class were always thought cute and the Stones (who played here in Chicago last night - I didn't go) were out of the middle class and thought more dangerous, Maybe there is nothing more dangerous than a middle class kid with money  ;D

Of course they're still alive (except for Brian) and we have only two Beatles left with us,

Liverpool is a great city @MrBouzouki  and @Vince  - I enjoyed the Cavern (was not so busy when I was there, and reading up on other bands that played there (Queen a.o.).
I also liked Strawberry fields and the parks surrounding it - Calderstone Park - such a vibrant place.

Wow, thank you for the pictures @oorlab .

Do you know if the harbor area is a "working" one or mostly pleasure boating and yachts?  I grew up in Annapolis and Baltimore Maryland  which back in the day was where water-men docked their boats for crabbing , fishing and oysters but not anymore.

@Vince  - I remember the Liverpool docks as particular vibrant and alive, but I didn't really check what kind of boats there were. But the water seemed clear, and the tides had their visible effects. Hamburg - that I visited a year later still has large shipyards, and an industrial looking vibe about it, but the pedestrian zone and the industrial zone were quite separated.

Talking of Liverpool I have just been to see the movie 'Yesterday', where the city features, as it is based on Beatles music. If you don't know yet, it is about a failing singer songwriter who is hit by a bus. When he wakes up nobody in the world knows any Beatles songs. And so he becomes world famous releasing them himself.

I'd recommend the film to aspiring writers like many on here, as the bit before he is famous is very funny and his struggles for an audience will resonate. Sadly, part two, when he makes it, is Hollywood formulaic and becomes a corny rom-com.

But @MrBouzouki , even though I live only a few miles from Liverpool I totally avoid all those touristy things, which is true of natives of many a city. But now you have prompted me I am going to visit that British Music thing with my son when he is visiting in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the reminder!  :ok:
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Thanks @Leonard Scaper! But here is a true story of why I don't take the Beatles touristy area of Liverpool too seriously...

A few years ago I was crossing the junction of Matthew Street, where The Cavern Club used to be, and where it has now been rebuilt as a replica. This lone Chinese guy asked me to take his pic next to the street sign, as a souvenir I guess. I did so. But then he asked me what time were The Beatles on tonight.

I laughed and said he'd got that a little wrong. No, no, he insisted. They were on and he had come from China especially to see them.

Then he pulled out a ticket for The Cavern later that night. Playing were The Bootleg Beatles, a well known local tribute act.

Maybe it was the language barrier, or maybe he just couldn't face the reality that he had travelled half way across the planet to see a fake band, but this guy wasn't having it. He was off to see The Beatles and what the hell did I know?

As I say, it's best to avoid that area!  ;D

Great story @MichaelA . What kernels of truth and reality pass from one generation to the next, I wonder? I can only hope that the Bootleg Beatles are able to impart some of that to their audiences.

Yes @Leonard Scaper , hopefully something is passed down. But I find it odd that people are claiming to find authenticity in a new Cavern built to look like the old one, but further down the street, plus various tribute Beatlles acts.

What am I saying? Where is my Beatles mop head wig? I can do a reasonable impression of John Lennon. There is money to be made! Woohoo!!!  ;D  :ok:

@MichaelA ..........I have friends who are in Liverpool right now....they have been sending me all kinds of Beatles tourist pictures. These two ladies are MASSIVE Beatles fans. I think I have one of them outside the cavern. It's odd to me to think of the Beatles as a tourist attraction.

I DID have a Beatles mophead wig back in 1665 as a youngster

Aahhh bless 'em, @Leonard Scaper, I am so pleased to see they are enjoying the city I really do love!

You should try wearing that mop head wig, if you can find it, next time you are writing! I would love to hear that joyous outcome, ha ha!  ;D

I remember when I was about 6, there being a 'solid -  plastic' mop-head wig about the house. That would have been around 1966.
One of those daft things that suddenly pops into your head.
