A great person to get the truth about all this is from is Ian Shepherd's site.

https://productionadvice.co.uk/

As an experienced Mastering Engineer of some 30 years experience , creator of the Loudness Penalty Analyser website ,

https://www.loudnesspenalty.com/

and the guy who setup 'Dynamic Range Day' ,

https://dynamicrangeday.co.uk/

he keeps abreast of all the current streaming changes and probably knows more about the current situation than anybody else.

To give some ideas of his credentials I've recently posted up his 6 part mastering course that appeared in Sound on Sound about Mastering in our "Songwriting Ingredients" section.

Yes @MrBouzouki

it has changed over the years ... even he admits it! I listen to his podcast all the time.

Unfortunately, the old information is still out there. People are still using info from 2018 ......     :o

https://productionadvice.co.uk/how-loud/

Quote
Firstly, all the streaming services turn louder music down, but not all of them turn quieter music up – for example YouTube & TIDAL. And the ones that do turn quieter songs up will try to avoid causing peak clipping as a result, either by restricting the extent to which levels can be lifted (iTunes) or by using a peak limiter (Spotify).

He even has stuff up from 2017!!!!!   :o    This all contributes to misinformation.  :-\

Ian Sheperd puts out great stuff ..... but ... everyone here if you don't want to go down this rabbit hole of mastering advice ... just know this:

YouTube, Spotify, Etc .... They WILL NOT turn your music up!!!!

Push it past that -14 and let them turn it down.

That's why the loudness penalty website is so useful if you want a competitive mix and can't be bothered to change listening volumes.
We are all getting very lazy as we used to do t all the time back in the day. I can clearly remember using the volume knob whist listening to an album. It was part of the experience.

Anyway I think that why Ian setup this site

https://www.loudnesspenalty.com/

As you can see from the graphic one of my earlier 'masters' (I didn't really know what I was doing back then) would be turned down on all these streaming platforms.

It's another useful tool in the arsenal and a quick way of checking against current standards.

That is a very good website!
@MrBouzouki
It focuses, however, on how much your music will be turned down.
That is definitely a problem at times.

My issue with Mr. Sheperd (and others) right now is that he never deletes his previous blog posts!
I mean you search stuff and something of his from 2016 will come up and "don't worry YouTube will turn your music up" or something is clearly stated.
He could delete those if he cared more about accurate information than getting clicks on his site. Or ... he could put EDIT in big red letters at the top and "this is no longer accurate please go to this link" or something.

Things are changing.   ::Hoss::

Volume knob?  :nopompom:

Please!   :shinyteeth:

We're noticing this on movies now as well!

Movies are so much quieter today!  ..... to the point that they can't be heard through a normal TV with a few people in the room ... or in a big room  ...

I mean I know loudness wars are bad    :-\

but a little bit of loudness would be nice.  :)

question
