Playing For Change Videos
on: September 20, 2019, 01:46:32

There are some videos on YouTube that I'd like to bring to the forums attention. They are a series of music videos made with musicians from around the world and I think they are quite interesting.

The one I've posted is a rendition of Robbie Robertson's "The Weight" It starts out with a phone call from Ringo asking what key the song is in

That is so cool @Vince . I love the way the arrangement is do fluid chssnging from one instrument to another. It is a pretty impressive production job.

Someone told me this song is actually about drugs.  Is it? If so, why would all these people agree to do it?
Does anyone know?

From when I first bought the original album  (Music From Big Pink) I always saw the song as being about a guy who has promised to look after a number of people for various reasons.  I never quite figured out those reasons. I figured "the weight" was all the responsibility the guy felt for agreeing to do that.

I never heard anything about it being about drugs.

@Dutchbeat @Leonard Scaper @Bill from November Sound   If you go to YouTube and search "playing for change" you'll find a few more videos. I also like the one where "Stand By Me" is covered.

I googled the meaning of "The Weight", and Lenny is close to what the site says the song means. I have trouble figuring out what a lot of songs mean (even my own).

I think the way the get all of the musicians from around the world together and film it at their locations seamlessly is something else. I don't think music can change the world, but it's nice to see music tie together so many people from so many different backgrounds.

I think it is cool how they have them all completely hooked up in those outdoor venues. The guitars are plugged in and the amps are mic;d up. Vocal mic's are the real thing and all connected. They are all wearing headphones. And here they are on the street or in front of a camp fire. When you know all those tracks were recorded in studios around the world.

If that's not the case then I'm taking my Peluso out into the back yard today to do the vocal track I have planned.  :)

I'm not so sure about that, Vince. Look back at the era that this song came from. I think music changed things in the 60's.  :)
