Two very interesting videos about the perils of digital music distribution. It's worth watching them both to get the whole story.

As far as I understand this is not only related to DT or digital music distribution but to everyone outside the US that receive payments from a US company.

"In most cases, a foreign person is subject to U.S. tax on its U.S. source income. Most types of U.S. source income received by a foreign person are subject to U.S. tax of 30%. A reduced rate, including exemption, may apply if there is a tax treaty between the foreign person's country of residence and the United States. The tax is generally withheld (Chapter 3 withholding) from the payment made to the foreign person"
https://www.irs.gov/publications/p515

I have filled out the tax information form at DT but they have never withheld any of my money so I guess there is a treaty in place between Sweden and the US.  I checked with the Swedish IRS and according to them I should pay Swedish tax on my US income and because of the treaty I don't have to pay any US tax hence no money is required to be withheld by DT.
I some situations I would have to pay US tax but then I could deduct that from my Swedish tax to avoid being taxed twice.

It seems this guys country don't have an agreement with the US and therefore he should pay US tax for his US income and the (hopefully) be able to deduct it from the tax payed in his country.

Complicate? Oh yes! Theft and foul play? I doubt it?.The videos looks more like a click bait to me

Complicated? Yes. Theft and foul play? I doubt that very much. These videos looks more like click bait to me

I don't believe this is click-bait as other musicians have contacted him with their own experiences.

He lives in Brazil I believe. I have no idea what their tax situation is with the US.

I suspect they have recently changed their business practices (for whatever reason) and his videos, amplified by others  made it a PR issue for them.

As always the truth is out there somewhere but who knows what it is  ... LOL

Okay .... I'm to say ANY video that has a thumbnail like that with an angry close up face, and big bold red or yellow print saying "SoundCloud ripped me off!" "Lady GaGa stole my song!" "Top 10 ways to use compression!" "Musicians: Don't do these 5 things!"  ..... etc. is

100%

Clickbait!!!

Could be my mistake, but I think a jail bait is far more fun than a click bait.
My suggestion? Let's focus on the fun!
Kind regards, Gus
