Tips for Writing Jazz?
on: October 18, 2015, 21:04:13
Hi everyone. Does anybody here like writing or experimenting with jazz music?

I am currently trying to. The intro of my song is done; so far I used this tutorial to feel my way through chords and a melody...

...and this tutorial to create a percussion part.

(midi of my intro in case anybody cares: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2DUIjehRGYUMkY5WnJaZDczUXM/view?usp=sharing. it's simple, I'm a beginner, don't judge)

Aside from being aware that jazz harmonies are built from chords more complex than triads or 7s, and that jazz tends to be improvisational/heavy on syncopation, and knowing it often features saxophone, piano, and brass instruments I'm more or less in the dark about this musical genre although I like listening to it.

Can anyone here provide me with other basic jazz tips, tricks, or principles to help me finish the song?

Because a topic about creative writing was moved today, my eye was caught by this old unanswered question.
Tips for writing jazz:
- listen to a favorite jazz piece - Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham,... but not for too long.
Then pick up your favorite instrument and carve out a simple tune - hummable, whistleable,...
improvise on top of that
Find people to play with.

@oorlab I take lessons from time to time for guitar, and for a little while I took lessons about playing Jazz  - I use to play jazz on the radio in my office and one of my co-workers  observed that that he thought it sounded like everybody played what they wanted, when they wanted and just smashed it altogether.

I thought that was funny and always remembered his comment.  :D
