Here's mine. It took about 15 minutes to write and a single session to record. Maybe I should have taken longer in the studio - it sounds a bit rough and ready  ;D

Funnily enough, this song has been covered by three different bands/artists, namely Craig Anderton, Fredfin Wallaby (band), and Doug West & Lynn Monk. I'm extremely flattered

Your turn...

Excellent pop tune @Mark Songsmith . I can see why it got covered.

Here's mine....it's pretty old. I see that I remixed it in 2014.....don't recall what I did to it then.

I was playing my old Stella acoustic on the back porch and I just started playing this song. It came pretty much just as you hear it. I got up and went in to the studio. I fired up the big tube mic for my voice, plugged in the KSM32 for the guitar and just sang the song.

I rarely record like that....pretty much never.

Hey that's a great topic @Mark Songsmith ! I loved your song, it's really catchy indeed!! Do you have links to the versions that were performed by the ones you mention? I'm curious how different it sounds.
This is a typical example (in my ears) of a song that has some wow factor even when not mixed/produced and polished. Was a nice listen!

@Leonard Scaper ow yes, that's great.. Just start playing and let the words come from your heart. This one sounds awesome to me. Very pleasant voice to listen too, well recorded. I love your guitar playing as well. Cool!

This one took me least time so far:

I was inspired by two older married people who lived as if they were still 16yo. I wrote the chords/lyrics immediately after that impression.

Cheers!

I'm proud of this track, check it out! https://soundcloud.com/martimedia/dreams

@Mar T. .........that is a powerful image. As songwriters we need to capture those images while they are fresh just as you did. Great tune as well.....I love the dynamics of the song throughout. I like the change-up at 2:25. Very cool guitar tone that comes in at 3:10 and brings the listener out.

Good thread topic......I'm all ears.

Thanks, guys  :)

Leonard, I really enjoyed the simplicity of your song along with the subdued (sometimes whispered) vocal  8)

Marti, fine song, great vocal and well-observed lyrics  8)

As requested, here are links to the three covers of my song Black Market Daydreams:

Great topic and great song @Mark Songsmith and welcome to the kitchen!! Covered 3 times - how cool - I'll check out the covers later!! Very catchy - I can see why it appealed..

@Leonard Scaper - lovely mood to your song.. pulls you in.. and there's real emotion oozing from the delivery - any reason it came to you like that you think?

@Mar T. - I remember that song - love it.. interesting that it was inspired by such a lovely and loving image..

Mine was also a very quick write and recorded very quickly on a zoom just after I wrote it. So a bit of a ropey recording also.. I guess inspired by a bit of rage and a lot of sadness after the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in Paris. I have never before nor since written a "political" song... Just came out I guess..

Hey @Mark Songsmith thanks for sharing! It's fascinating to hear three different interpretations of this song, the first (youtube) came closest to what I 'heard' when I listened to your own version. Fantastic!!
Btw thanks for your compliment about 'dreams'!

@Zedd ow yes... I am Charlie.. I just joined this forum about the time you wrote this, and I was soo blown away. I still am when listening again.. Brilliant..

This is a fun thread!!
:mart:

@Zedd ....I am Charlie is an incredibly powerful piece. As I listened I pictured you on a stage with and instrumentalist just behind you....a very vivid image.

Thank you for asking about Carry Me. That is a special one for me because of how it came. I had just turned 60 years of age and perhaps I was feeling the weight of the many changes my life has gone through in all of those years. All of my songs are born of the residual emotions from those changes and I think that, for some reason, I was in a place that sunny afternoon where that emotional stew found a rift in my conscious defenses and just bubbled up all at once. I definitely felt my mortality.

It's funny...I have over 200 songs on my hosting site and I really play very few of them. When I play Carry Me....that emotional conduit is always right there.

btw....I wrote a song in response to that horrible event as well. This may not be the right place to post it, but.....

Very interesting topic and some really good music came out of some quick writing.

The basic stripped down songs of @Zedd and @Leonard Scaper are really breath taking and although simplistic in that there's "just" a voice and an instrument, they are both powerful songs. Wonderful words from @Zedd on her song.

That's a great achievement having a song covered 3 times @Mark Songsmith

Nice song @Mar T. - I haven't heard this one before. Great subject for a song as well and some great observations from you. I think any writer (fiction, songs, poetry etc.) need to also be observers as a lot of ideas can come from the everyday that we all experience.

For me, the quickest song I wrote and recorded was https://soundcloud.com/jurgen-joarder/just-words-1

cheers

Ooooh wow we're proving something in this thread.. We have to record and save our most spontanious ideas as early as possible, what a great music here!
@Leonard Scaper I loved your 'The Seeds Of Peace'. It gives me another perspective to that same feel I have about those with horrible intentions. You reminded me to put my personal angle into a song as well somewhere in the future. Beautiful song and I loved the listen!

Ow men and @Jurgen I looooooved your 'Just Words' from the fist listen. And the way @Mark Luto recreated that gem in our Kitchen Cover Competition... Yes... We have to really save our potential gems and help each other to broadcast the different angles of thoughts and feel.. Ow I love this place. Just words was a fantastic idea Jurgen!!

Cheers!!

@Jurgen ........Just Words is also a very powerful message......."with venom or so-called jest".

@Mar T. ........thanks for your kind words about The Seeds of Peace. I had forgot about that tune.....maybe in denial of that event and the anger it brought out of me. I thank @Zedd for bring those important feelings back up.

@Mark Songsmith .....this really is an excellent thread! I think the songs that come to us quickly like this are always going to connect with our listeners at an emotional level where they will resonate more. I have not been in The Kitchen very long but I am seriously impressed with the songwriting and presentations I have had the pleasure of listening to. This is the best collection of home grown music I have found anywhere.
