If you don't know (I hear you) - Mar T Mix!!!

Hey,

I've been quiet I know for the last while - lots of RL stuff going on keeping me away... Hopefully I'll get on more soon...

This is one I've been struggling with.. For a bunch of reasons - partly my technical ability and partly a bit of a block I think... And possibly because the last thing I posted was so fantastically produced I've been RUINED ( @Jambrains  ;D ;D )....

Ok.. I'm looking for general feedback - I won't list my own niggly bits here yet. I have some great suggestions from @Jambrains which I will try and incorporate but haven't managed successfully yet... So basically, all brutally honest feedback welcome..

I love singing this but somehow when I record it, it doesn't seem to have the same spark (IMO).

If you don't know (I hear you)

Verse 1:
You catch me unawares
As I listen again and again
Your words touch me deeply
In a way that I don't comprehend

I didn't know what I was feeling
Till I found you
I was blissfully melancholic
My sadness unassumed

Chorus:
If I don't know I'm hurting
Does it mean that I'm fine?
And if you don't know I hear you
How can I make you mine?

Verse 2:
Push past my defences
My sword and my shield
I was fooling myself so completely
With lies ingrained and lies believed

Pierced by the weapons you wielded
Your words and your voice
Pared away my illusions
And exposed my every choice

Chorus:
If I don't know I'm hurting
Does it mean that I'm fine?
And if you don't know I hear you
How can I make you mine?

M8
I can't turn you off again
Now you're playing in my head
You can't unsay, I can't unhear
The things you said

Chorus:
If I don't know I'm hurting
Does it mean that I'm fine?
And if you don't know I hear you
How can I make you mine?

Hi Karen,

I like this...it has a soulful wistful feeling to it...a couple of vocal niggles but overall I like it.  ;D  I wondered if a little key change for the chorus might lift it a little? (I know, I'm always suggesting key changes).  The guitar could be more lively maybe?  Sometimes working out a different part of the fretboard to play (which can happen after changing key, and not cheating with a capo!) can lead to finding these new fingerings... ;)

Hi Karen,

First of all, I'm loving the melancholic feel of this song! Reminds me a bit of early Placebo (in a good way ;) )
Lots of emotion in the vocals, too. They sound almost fragile, and looking at the lyrics that's just perfect - great performance !
Another very strong point of the song are definitely the drums. The snare sounds fantastic, so does that change of pace in the drum pattern, introducing the cymbal when the chorus starts.

What makes this track so good, IMO, is how nicely understated the arrangement sounds. The chorus in particular is so powerful, lyrically, but by turning it up just very subtly (instead of all the way up to 11), it sounds way more intense and emotional. This underlines the delicate vocal performance once again. Very well done :)  (Tell me if I'm reading too much into this, I just really like the effect the chorus has on the listener ;) )

On a purely technical level, I found the guitar to be a bit too dry. I would add some (panned?) delay here maybe. Then again, I'm a delay-fanatic :D
I also thought that the whole track (except for the drums, they're awesome!) was a bit narrow, stereo-wise. Too much going on in the centre of the mix.

But all in all a good production of a very good song with plenty of feeling !

Hi Karen,

Great mood. Lovely low key vibe - which always appeals to me. Actually put me of a mind of Al Green - How Do You Mend a Broken Heart - but a more indie/rocked.
Love the bits of backing vocal.
Very nice bridge.
The rawness is great.
Suggestions - don't polish out the natural feel.

Love it.

I fully agree with @digger72. DO NOT over-polish this track. The ONLY thing, and this may just be a speaker issue, I woul EQ your vocal a little brighter, just a little. Other than that, LEAVE IT ALONE. As you will learn, having worked in studios for 30 plus years, I am not a big fan of over produced singer-songwriter material. For the last 20 years I've played with so many top-notch musicians in living rooms, kitchens and on front porches that I like intimate over flash.  Just say'in.

Woooowwww... How much I've missed your music @Zedd !
I love the chord progressions and melodies.. I also love how intimate this song sounds,
great balance in the mix imo.. Yes @Michael, a bit centered, I agree, but I really like it as is.. I
think it contributes to the intimate feel, and I don't hear frequencies 'fighting' for room.
I agree with @Mr Sydney about the vocal eq, when I exaggerate it sounds like you're singing into a
plasic cup. I think you boosted a mid there, I'd undo that ;-)
I loved listening to your vocal work, I'm always surprised how you manage to add so much emotion to
your singing without using tricks. Fantastic!! Goosebumps here, immediately!
Thanks so much for sharing, I enjoyed every second!

Now it works. Did you change anything with the link? it probably was something with my mobile internet connection... ???

I love the song! The lyrics, the melancholic overall mood, your beautiful vocals and subtle harminies, the sound of all the instuments, especially the snare drum and the tin whistle. Fantastic work, very well done! ::headphone::

My niggles (and they are marginal) would be:
- the "doubled" ending consonant in "voice" at 1:53
- I'm not exactly a fan of the clapping in the bridge. (stupid question - what does M8 mean?)
- agree with the others about the EQing of vocals. A tiny bit brighter would be nice.

That would be all. I wonder how @Jim 's key change would sound though.

Karma to you! And yes, it would be great to see you around some more. :)

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks so much guys for taking the time to listen to this and for your lovely comments and pointers... Both REALLY appreciated..

Erm, @Michael ... Panning - I completely didn't even think of it..  I'm embarrassed to admit it but it's true.... I'll have a look at that and the dryness of the guitar.. Thanks a mill.  Oh.. and Placebo! I loved them back in the day (I met Brian Molko once drinking some blue cocktail or other after a gig many many years ago).. Thanks for that and for your detailed review.

To @Mr Sydney and those commenting on the EQ, I'll see if I can work it out... @MartiMedia has pointed me in the direction of tips before, I'll dig them up but again I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't a baldies how to work the EQ settings but I guess it's time I took the time to work it out!!! I guess I'll have to throw away the plastic cup I was singing into then @MartiMedia  :-) Damn, I was growing quite attached to it.. Thanks for your comments - it's lovely to be "back"!!!

@Mark Luto I think the "choice / voice" thing is the backing vox which have a delay effect - I'll see if I can tweak them a little.. Oh and yes the clapping, I agree they're a little naff - I pared back the drums in the M8 / bridge and then thought they were too lean but I'll work out something a little better than that..

I'll have a look at the key change @Jim but not sure I've the patience to do a major re-record of a section.. But I'll try it "live" and see.. It's an interesting idea and not one I'd considered..

@digger72 - Al Green.. There's an unexpected comparison :)... I'm guessing it's the picked chords at the beginning... Thanks a mill for your post - and your note on my potential to meddle away the rawness ...

Again, thank you all for your comments...

Karen

I think this is a great song, a very memorable, yet very sad song, the chorus is very good IMO

Wow @Zedd ! This is just a fantastic piece! I'm a big fan of your work with this one. Your vocals are so filled with emotion together with the overall arrangements results in a true and hones recording. I can't possibly come with any suggestions! Btw I really like how your voice leaves a mark in the track just wanting me to listen again and again. Your tone are just something special! Karma
