A song Among Fish
on: March 03, 2020, 00:56:55
The song started when I was trying to figure out how to play Old School Motown patterns. You can still hear traces of it in this song.

The lyric was really about a simple idea, but it was something that kept me busy last week.

Among Fish

Incoming fish
Had to learn how to swim
So they had a mind set
On teaching the skill

So, I censored my gills
And my glistening scales
Rubbed some leaves in the lake
Thought it funny, but strange

As Iíd swum all the way
From a neighbouring tarn
Taking ditches and more
Through elodean yarn

Move your fins in all threes
First the front on the left
Then one more to the right
Then swing your tail
Because thatís how we float
Thatís how itís done

Piscine guideline
Set in stone in the rocks
Where they knew how to sway
In a tabulate way

And the water proved cold
From these glowering eyes
Being judges of how
I was waving my dorsal

I remembered the bolt
From the alternate pond
Where Iíd sped from the brass
And their treacherous jaws

Hi Eric @Pleudoniem  - will listen to your song asap through good speakers. My first tasting on phone yesterday sounded cool. Sparse, with emphasis on the beat.
Nice title, makes me think of a Radiohead title.
"Weird Fishes / Arpeggi" - do you know that track?

I listened to this last night in the studio. What really strikes me about it is the depth that you achieve with your instrumentation. And that cool kind of punchy bass is just right.

Really expressive drumming in this one as well. This was a seriously enjoyable listen in my good headphones. You always have such tonally balanced material in generally but this one was particularly tasty

And, of course, the song itself is typically enigmatic.  ;)

@Leonard Scaper  @Pleudoniem  - I just listened on the room speakers. Can also confirm the expressiveness of the drums and detail in the drums.
I got as a related track on SC https://soundcloud.com/georgesalbertoga/color-your-dreams-fisrt-take. Although I don't quite hear the relation - it is an interesting comparison for the overall loudness.

Nice funky piece @Pleudoniem !

My visualisation for this song: I'm sitting in a bar in the middle of the desert. There's a few people at the tables, the blistering heat sweats the head and two people with space suits walk in. This song is pumping out of the two boxy speakers wedged in between the roof space.

Yeah, very funky indeed.  8)
The bass line is super cool, got my foot tapping and carried me very nicely through the song.

Also enjoying the keys coming in around the 1 minute mark.
I agree that the arrangement sounds very balanced. A lot of interesting details going on, but never too much at the same time. very well executed!

Btw the lyrics are very clever too. Although I cannot claim that I would have gotten the school connection without your brief explanation on soundcloud ::)

@Monty Cash Music It's funny that you get this idea. That's quite like how Tea in the Sahara by The Police struck me when I heard it for the first time. The Police are icons to me. Their title alone gave enough reason for such an image, but I imagine that a sea, in a way, may feel like a desert too. @Leonard Scaper Yes enigmas. I like film-like portraits of what goes on in the mind and beyond.

@oorlab @Michael I have been working on the balance in the songs a lot lately. It always had my interest, but I now have some tools here that add an extra dimension to it. I am not sure if it is them that do the trick, but one of them is an analogue tape imitator, which tries to replicate the sound as if recorded by a tape deck. Although we drown in digital tools today, ironically, what I'd read about analogue mimickry was that listeners appear to like it better than pure digital sound (even if the tool is digital itself). I think I agree with them, so I thought it was worth the experiment. I am not sure what the reason is that this works well. I'd like to hear your comments on it.

And the bass. It started with an amp/fx setting that resembled Pastorius in Teen Town. It worked alright, but then I started trying out some other settings, just for the heck of it, and ended up with a dry punchy funky sound. It sounded a bit like what Francis Rocco Prestia did when he still had enough life essence to play for Tower of Power. I have always loved his style. It has stuck.

This was a journey well taken! Reminds me of older psychedelic music. Has a trance like quality to it.

I like anything that has to do with water and fish...oh yeah. I'm a Pisces.

Thanks for sharing this! I enjoyed the journey and look forward to more.

The mix was tight . No nits to nit :)
