Ancient Trees - habiTat
on: November 19, 2013, 22:02:43
Hello Kitcheneers  ;D

I've just recorded this little ditty, I'd love to know your thoughts...

Ancient Trees

All I know
Is all I see
I stand below
The swaying trees

They sing to me
Their pagan hymns
Through icy winds

And I am good
To all I meet
And I am strong
On my own feet

And if you fall
I will be there
When we grow old
I will be there

On the ground
Among the bark
Needles fall
Throughout the dark

Those ancient trees
They sing to me
And we lie still
In harmony

And I am good
To all I meet
And I am strong
On my own feet

And if you fall
I will be there
When we grow old
I will be there

I hope you know
I'm there for you
I made my vow
That is my proof

And if those trees
Should one day fall
I'll hold your hand
And we'll stand tall

A great song John! The highlight for me is the guitar work which has real purpose.  The harmonies are lovely.  Did you record this to a click?  I wonder is it strictly in time - often it's difficult to tell when a song is presented with guitar and vocal.  Anyway, I'm very impressed.  It would be a great song to produce if you win the Christmas song competition - one of the reasons I ask about the timing, it makes a producers job much easier. Excellent ! :)

I like this song very much John. With a proper recording and with further instruments can this be a real gem.Very good lyrics.Only the repetition of "I will be there" in the chorus I would change.

that is great! nice soothing chords, and good lyrics

singing melody remind me of U2 songs

this is super, that would be nice with a bass and drum track and the occasional long stringy note running true

me, myself, and Pie

Oh boy, this is gorgeous.

Guitar playing wonderfully in keeping with the song. Your voice is probably the best I've heard it on this recording. Harmonies very like Simon & Garfunkel which this reminded me of. Lovely, lovely melody and fabulous lyrics.

This is the best thing I've heard from you so far. I can hear a U2 influence but the instrumentation and vocals take it far away from that (not that being as good as a U2 song is a bad thing!)

I would be very tempted to not change this in terms of instrumentation. I think there is enough interest in your playing, the harmonies and the melody intervals to keep people listening without resorting to the usual production formula. It needs polishing from a recording point of view but other than that I'd leave it alone.

This is a special, special piece of music that has commercial possibilities along with it's obvious artistic merit.

Loved it.

I love the chords Habi , absolutely love them ( although I think the guitar is slightly out of tune )

The vocal effects are preferably suited to this song and mood

You have done an amazing job with the backing vocals - I know this is very hard

It's got a great driving rhythm - I have enjoyed your last 2 songs better than anything you have ever produced

I think you are really coming of age as an artist and I completely respect this one

Kudos  :D

And a karma point  ;)

Thanks guys, I managed to grab a two hour window last night so I sat with the lyrics and cobbled it together.

@Kaf, cheers mate, I'm not sure what I'm doing differently if my songs are getting better, aside from needing to rush everything more  :D You're right though I think the guit may have been slightly out of tune  >:(  The chords are just E, then the same shape slid up the fretboard, I really like just messing with shapes, I spent years writing songs with basic chords and I got bored of them. I really appreciate your comments :)

@Paul, Unfortunately (for you  :D :D) it is not recorded to a click, just my own internal atomic clock pendulum  :D  Thanks for your review.

@Monty, thanks for the comments on the vocal, I've actually got the remnants of a cold but hopefully that didn't hinder anything. I'm consciously trying to record my songs in a slightly lower register than previously, to try to avoid the straining sound  :-\ at higher notes. Maybe this is why you think it sounds better. It also gives me more room for harmonies.

@DB and Alexander, thanks guys, and yes I also think it does deserve a better, less rushed recording, another one for the to do list   :D

Cheers again guys, btw I am trying to work through my reviewing duties, it's just when I can grab a few mins here and there.

Well this is obviously gorgeous.  :)
I too really like the guitar work on this one and think it's probably better to leave it as it is with no further instrumentation.
Those backing vocals worked really well for me.
The lyrics were well suited to the whole atmosphere.
Very nice work.  :)

Hi Habitat,

The harmonies are really good.
I like the attack on the guitar - adds impetus. Nice interlude bit towards the end. I too get a bit of U2 - "All I Want Is You" - sort of sound - which is no bad thing.
Certainly doesn't outstay its welcome.

Nice one.
