Another-Armchair-Moralist
on: June 24, 2019, 11:32:22

I wrote this for a good friend who couldn't and can't leave off from giving unsolicited advice.
I didn't know how to deal with it at the time, now I do.

The lyrics

Another Armchair Moralist

Im talking with nobody listening, see,
front line walking just like a refugee
sentimental, old friend says I'm out of touch
so hard to be gentle when handling the softer stuff

you've seen this face before, You remember the name
in mass-production I, I'm plenty of the same
much more than y'bargained for, now, don't lose your cool in the rush
stripped down n' ribbon bound on arrival the petals are crushed

more than a brother, too dear to bid adieu
another armchair moralist, the word is not the truth
another armchair moralist, too close to be cut loose

down under the waterline, down in the thick of it
I surrender one last time, although, truly sick of it
my nightmare scenario, yeah, my indiff'rence killer
after I hopping over bedpans go to find him in the mirror

only I and I alone must throw myself to the wire
as you sit on a distant throne, too green for the fire
what will it amount to, in the case that it does not combust
I could do without you only missing the sense of enough

more than a brother, too dear to bid adieu
another armchair moralist, the word is not the truth
another armchair moralist, he's dear to me,
                                                                too close to be,
                                                                      expensively... cut loose

Hi @Rightly

Once again you make us accomplices of a scene that you portray with many colors .... I like your lyrics, I love

"only I and I alone must throw myself to the wire
as you sit on a distant throne, too green for the fire.."
I did not know that to live I had to die so many times

@Rightly - sounding fine , great lyrics. The vocal line could be a bit more melodic at certain points. Just a thought.
Cheers

yes, I guess so.
I remember really getting off on the rhythm and the percussive style at the time.
I'm happy what became of this song but I'd do it differently now.
It comes from a time I was very concentrated, looking to write something for other committed artists.
I went out of my way to contact a group, I liked the singers voice in particular.
To my surprise they started suggesting fundamental changes, so ridiculous and disconnected, I lost interest in about 5 minutes.
I might have had the idea at the time to give something good away and this would motivate me to top it.
Anything to avoid those blocks!

I love the rhythmic quality of this track @Rightly and lyrically it's very interesting.

For some crazy reason I can hear harmonica over this (blues bends etc. filling in the gaps) I don't know why ??
Also  bongos underpinning the guitar rhythm.

Nice piece of work this - it sounds quirky and original.

Hi @Rightly

I like the words on this and the song itself has a nice feel to it. The guitar playing has a good feel and rhythm to it as well.

It does have the same level of intensity all the way through other the part near the end that starts "more than a brother" - and I think some variety would be good - i.e. a part that goes quieter and then builds.

Now that @MrBouzouki mentions it - I can also hear a harmonica in there as well.

cheers

I actually like how the vocal plays off that very cool guitar rhythm.

Interesting suggestion about harmonica. I was the guy playing harmonica on songs like this back in those 70's jam sessions around the wood stove....it could work here as well in a loose setting like that.

For me the harmonica is melodic and is good for sustained notes
this track is punchy n rhythmic. I can't see it fitting.

once a big Dylan fan I never cared for his harmonica. Maybe I just haven't heard the right harmonica.
