"Anyone But Me" new song
on: June 04, 2017, 23:51:13
As a novice guitar picker, I recently discovered drop-D tuning. This is the result. During my work as a journalist, I was fortunate to have been able to find myself in life changing situations in the dangerous townships of early 90s South Africa. Separation from my wife was the inspiration for this latest one.

Anyone but Me

In a room not my own, I await the subtle whisper of the new sunrise
With shadows being thrown, upon the wall and changing shape before my eyes
The distance far too great to comprehend, as my heart betrays my effort to pretend
At this moment I wish that I could be, anyone but me

The mirror lied once more, and fooled me in to thinking that the sky was blue
Yet just beyond the door, in faceless crowds I cannot help but look for you
Assaulted by the chaos in the street, within myself I silently retreat
At this moment I wish that I could be, anyone but me

Anyone who wouldn’t feel the need to care
Or wish he dried the tears as you were standing there
Anyone who somehow had a choice to stay
Who didn’t have to risk it all and walk away

A poet’s tongue can share, the raw emotion captured in a single phrase
Caught so unaware, by echoes folding back to me from brighter days
The constant stream of the love that you provide, I have no choice to put it all aside
At this moment I wish that I could be, anyone but me

The moon at my back, illuminates the twisted path that leads me here
It clarifies the fact, sometimes in life things are never clear
Acts of contrition are performed, in the face of the oncoming storm
At this moment I wish that I could be, anyone but me

That guitar sounds excellent! Drop D suits your style perfectly. You captured that guitar sound beautifully as well.

Good song too...I really look forward to your songs.

When you are feeling even more adventurous you might like DADGAD.

@Leonard Scaper   Thanks so much! I really appreciate that.  DADGAG huh?  Forgive my novice question...is THAT the open G? Funny, I've been playing fiddle for 20 years and people ask "what key is that?"  I seem to have Key block!  I never remember that kind of stuff.

@Movin Flavour   I'm grateful for comments. I still hear the warts and flubs on the guitar, but I'll take any positive feedback I can get. One day, maybe, I'll actually like my guitar work. Then again...

DADGAD @Mr Sydney ....all those D's make for a very cool experience. Every once in while I throw my ancient Kalamazoo into that open tuning and just let my fingers wander around to see what's there. It can be a very freeing experience for an old school cowboy chord guitarist like me.

@Mr Sydney I simply love this. The drop D turning is great. (Actually, on my list of things to do this year (I'm not good at finishing lists) to explore some of these new tunings). This is one of my favorites of your lyrics. You always write with such clarity, but here there just seems others depths in the words.

I love the dropped D tuning in this track @Mr Sydney  :) I have one song that I tried that tuning, and I found it very freeing  ::e-guitar3::
The lyrics, vocals and melody totally suit this style ::thumb:: Nice guitar picking  ::Suzy::

@Olbigead  This was one of the rare occasions when the music came first. I guess the "depths" come from the reality of the experience. It was a dangerous yet thrilling time to be in South Africa. My wife was fairly well convinced I was going to die, got a little dicey at times...but here I am. Thanks so much for the listen and kind words. They mean a lot coming from a writer who I admire.

@CrystalSuzy  Thank you for the listen. After a few years picking I finally tried the drop-D and, you're right, it was a good fit for the words that followed. As I said in a Soundcloud post, YOU have a great, unique style...keep 'em coming. I love your music.

Very nice song! Love the guitar part, and the lyrics are very poetic.
