Back in the Room
on: June 23, 2020, 21:10:18
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/back-in-the-room
this one started as an experiment with the freeware VST Firebird that has some cool arpeggio patches.
The set up with guitars and strings was not difficult to fill in. The title presented itself, from a talk I had about Little Britain. The further lyrics needed ( as usual with me) a bit more work.

You're back in the room
ready & able
to join in the zoom

You're back in the room
Don't you say the future
is gone and all is gloom.

You're back in the room
your ghost has been summoned
to a lonely tune.

We're back on track
That we left
When we marched
behind that doomsday flag.

Turn on the radio
there's a friendly voice
to keep me company.

Spare me your anger,
I'd need an angel
to set things straight.

Going back to base
in this day & age
have to get a bit of cooling
to slip out of this cage.

@oorlab  :yes:

This music transmits something quite different to other music that you were doing lately
Maybe this could be due to that obligatory evolution in which we are all involved thanks to this murderous pandemic
The thing is that this music for my taste is very good in every way

Congratulations and try to continue on that musical path  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Nice touch of Talking Heads about this track...  Mix needs some work - kit is way too quiet (and some slight timing things going on with the rest of the instruments and vocal) - but altogether a nice psychedelic vibe to it - and plenty of options to develop it. Enjoyable listen!

Hola @oorlab

I really liked the song, it is solid, with very catchy parts,
your voice sounds great and the mix is very well balanced.
Finally a photo with a beautiful lute

I liked this line
"You're back in the room
your ghost has been summoned
to a lonely tune."
I did not know that to live I had to die so many times

I like how this song develops......lots going on.

I hear what @Tolo is talking about with the kit and some of the timing.

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

Thanks @Dutchbeat  @marcus_jb  @Mora Amaro La Loba  @Leonard Scaper  @Tolo  for the feedback. Coming weekend (hopefully the heatwave has ended then, high temperatures are not very good for music making) I wll check the drumkit and timing issues.
Cheers
D

I am very quickly taken if a song bears the thumb print of the owner.
And every time you post something, itís immediately recognizable and musically uplifting one way or another.

Took me some time to understand that the kit was the drum kit and not the police as in Amsterdam dialect. If you write, simply because itís fun to write, I wouldnít change a thing.
Wild thing (The Troggs), Louie Louie (The Kingmen) arenít exactly flawless and still they are the touch stone of a good song.

I am with Marcus, itís almost perfect in every way.
I am with my father who always said that perfection is for fools. We get 80% of the work done in 20% of the time. So you must have a serious reason to strive for perfection.
Whatever your decision, I love this one already.
Kind regards, Gus

thanks @Tolo @Leonard Scaper  - for pointing out the drumkit / timing issue. I upped the drums in the mix, a bit and adjusted the snare drum at one particular point, that was a bit out of the timeframe. I replaced the file on SC, so here is the new version

Hey @oorlab ....I have to honestly say that the snare is still distracting me. The section in the first verse from 0:31 to around 0:40 is typical of what I'm hearing but there are a couple of other spots as well where it just doesn't quite fit in.

That has me wondering how the song would sound without the snare at all.

@Leonard Scaper  - thanks for the continuing interest. The drum recording is 1 wav, I can't isolate the snare. I could leave out the drums altogether, but then there will be parts in the song where there is not much going on...
The only thing I could do is lower the drums in the mix again, or use EQ to flatten certain parts of the spectrum.

I love this style,  how its starts and all....its so 'reduced' to what is important and it has a awesome lightness and authentic. The melodys ounds very good! to me

@oorlab ....listened again. While I like those snare rolls at the beginning, I'd be curious as to how the song sounds without any drums. For me the drums in this one distract from your classic style. Even on my first listen I found myself listening to that snare more than to the other elements of the song.

I bet you could find ways to fill the spaces that were created.  ;)

You know how I am about drums in my own stuff. They never work for me due to my somewhat odd rhythms. This song feels similar to that for me.....as if it wants to find its own cadence rather than being marched along by a steady drum beat.

https://hearthis.at/4928998/ - here a mix @Leonard Scaper  - just the kick as a metronome. So I left out the drums I played by hand on the electronic drumkit, but with real sticks. Possibly the song sounds sparse in this version. I hope to find a band in my hometown to try and jam on this, and have other singers to sing along.
Thanks @Mo for the heads up, reduced is a good way of looking at it.

Hey @oorlab ....I like this no drum mix.....even though there are a few empty spaces. You might fill those spaces with some creative ride cymbal stuff if you have that option. Now the feeling of the song really flows over me as I listen.

Thanks for letting me kibitz on this one.  8)
