Back To Monterey

https://soundcloud.com/m57/back_to_monterey

I just introduced myself in the "Me" forum, and Mar T. suggested I post something I've written. This is my most recent song. I wrote it late this summer and, true to my OCD inclinations, I've been tweaking it since.  I'm still looking to replace the VI oboe with a real one and augment the strings with a real one as well. Both players are acquaintances and I hope to have them over sometime in December to put down some parts.

Dad was on vacation - took the family for a ride
We got caught up in the songs we sang and the exits passed us by
Pretty soon the darkness fell and we looked up and saw a clear and moonless sky.

It couldnít be more beautiful; the stars, they were on fire.
With the tank approaching emptiness, well it came down to the wire
We made our destination and I remember these, the best of times

Thereís nothing wrong when you can laugh things off and try another way.
So we sang along on the journey back to Monterey

We are the stuff of battles lost just as much the ones we've won
The constellations of where weíve been and of all the songs weíve sung
So when rambling roads and songs donít take me anywhere, well then Iíll know

Thereís something wrong when I canít find me another way
Oh it would sure feel good if I could make it back to Monterey

Last night I and Amelia got lost between the strings
Her vapor trails came floating down and wrapped around my wings
In disbelief I went outside and looked up and saw a clear and moonless sky.

And all the stars, they fell around me in disarray
That's why Iím going back to Monterey

I donít belong here anymore; these arenít my days or times.
Donít give me so many choices - no, Ďcause Iíve made up my mind.
Yeah, youíve all got friendly voices, but I can read the signs
These are the memories I'll save, and hold on to my wings tonight

Letís sing about adventure with the windows open wide
Weíll sing right through the fog and chill and let the exits pass us by.

Very convincing and impressive. Specially love the drumming in the second part. The hobo / oboe sounds great to me. Only thing I can comment upon - "I and Amelia" - I would have turned that around. Just a small detail.
Thumbs up!
...
been listening - very impressive music.

Hey @M57 ! Wow that sounds beautiful! What a beautiful voice and the
instrumental/mix/production sound awesome to me!
What a catchy melody in the vocals, it sticks in my head immediately.
I especially love the dynamics in the individual tracks, seems
you know how to play your instruments/sing.. Respect!
Smart drum breaks at 3:30 and on, the backvocals sound perfect.
Only suggestion would be to review the de-esser on the main vocal,
but that is really nitpicking.. I'd de-ess a little bit more
(guilty of NOT doing that myself all the time).
Fantastic track imo, you have a new fan Mark!
Keep them coming!!

Hi @M57

This is a great song - I really like the words and it comes across as a real experience based on real memories.

Your voice is impressive - has a nice quality to it, soothing almost. You're telling a story with your voice and it draws the listener in.

The song also builds really well.

I'm with @oorlab when I read the "I and Amelia" but when you sing it, it does scan and fit just right.

nice song

cheers

Thank you for listening and your kind words.

RE: De-essing.. Yeah - I've tried couple de-essers, and I'm actually using one on the track if you can believe it; I just hate what a de-esser does to the track (more likely I'm just not good enough an engineer to use it properly), so I'm just touching it, and not letting it dig too much into those frequencies.  Part of the problem is simply that I need to be more careful about how I sing into the mic.  I'm learning that apparently I sing with a good amount of sibilance - I've got to learn to tame it better.

RE: "I and Amelia"  both of you are not the first, nor will be the last to notice I'm sure, but I assure you I was painfully aware of and wrestled with it even as I wrote the lyric.  @Jurgen, you are absolutely right, it does sing the best of all the alternatives I could come up with. Fortunately, and with a bit of research, it turns out not to be incorrect, as the 'rules' regarding order in this particular case are fast becoming archaic.  Let's just call it hyperbaton, and leave it there to grab our attention - as it should. I had no choice but to use Amelia.  I'm curious if anyone recognizes the allusion(s) there.

@M57 Mark. A hobbyist you say? As a hobbyist myself I can say you sound like the real thing to me. So I will keep listening to your wonderful track and hope I learn something. BTW, for some reason, this one reminds me a bit of Bruce Hornsby (although to be honest I like it far more than I like Bruce Hornsby!)

This song is excellent! ::thumb::

It has an interesting arrangement and production. I really appreciate the expressive and unique vocals.

Hah. I believe 'hobby' is the correct term. I spend a lot of money and time.. and make nothing but sound.

Love Bruce Hornsby. Thank you for the huge compliment.

Hi @M57,

yes, you have some really great songs to offer which I found out today on Soundcloud before seeing the song here. This one is really great starting from the song down to the arrangement. One can hear that you spend a lot of time, effort and heart to get your songs into shape. Only two comments.

1. You really should use a Deesser (as already commented). I find this one very good: https://www.toneboosters.com/ (TB Silbalance) and also very affordable (20 dollars or so).
2. Sometimes in the arrangement I hear too many things (especially with the piano) happening that distract me a little bit from the lyrics / your voice.

Best,

Fabian

Really enjoyed this @M57 - I have checked it out before actually and had already "Liked" it so I have come across you before on Soundcloud so it's good to have you here..

Very skilfully put together track I must say. The playing and the production is top notch and you have a really lovely voice.  The song itself is very strong both melody- and lyric-wise.  I'm guessing the Amelia ref is Amelia Earhart and possibly a nod to Joni Mitchell.. or maybe not!

Your style reminds me of someone - can't quite put my finger on it.. S&G/John Cougar Mellencamp mash maybe. Whatever it is, I guess it reminds me of professional recordings... I'll be checking out more of your music.

Again, welcome to the kitchen.

Fabian - Yeah, up until recently I've been able to convince myself that it's not a big deal, and I have been light with the de-essing, but now that everyone has piled on with the de-esser comment, it can't be ignored.  I'm so excited - I just pulled the trigger and purchased a 1 year subscription to the Slate Suite, which is on Black Friday special price through tomorrow and includes the Eiosis De-esser.  It's a pretty amazing plug and easy to use.  I was playing with it this morning and updated the file this afternoon.  If you get a chance to listen and see if you think it's any better, that would be appreciated.

RE: the thick arranging/distraction thing - yeah - it's busy. I'm afraid that's my MO.

Thanks for the good critical listening..  That's what we should be here for, right?

Hey @M57 did you swap the file for the new version on SC? I'm not sure if I hear a difference in the de-essing.. Is it possible to up yesterday's version on a private SC link so I can A/B compare?

Also...can I buy it?

Wow, the ultimate compliment.  Thank you so much.

Hah - I wouldn't even know how to go about selling it.  Well, not exactly, but you know what I'm mean.  I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to sell a million copies and I'm worried that my ego probably can't handle that the full value of my song is $35.27.  :-\
