Big Screen
on: November 04, 2016, 20:21:09
Another poppy summer song written with collaborators at Newcastle College from last year's songwriting course.. I know it's pitched a bit high for me - but I enjoyed doing it!

https://soundcloud.com/steve-gray-songwriting/big-screen

From black & white to the silver screen
At the Odeon on Golderís Green
You and me - what can it mean?
Is it the greatest story ever seen?

Whispering love in the fading light
Outside itís day, in here itís night
Our love on the big screen
Holding hands, it feels just right

Working as an usherette
Thereís one thing that I canít forget
The many years we have been a secret
Letís put our love on the big screen

So many years, our love kept safe
Curtain hanging, a special place
I may be celluloid, but you donít mind
One more time - let the film re-wind
Today I'm only one day older. Do you think my hair's turned grey?

hi @redmando

I like the words - and I'm interested in the process of writing with collaborators - for example were you given a subject between a group of you or did someone start the idea and then pass it around?

re: the song - the vocals are a bit echoey for me - maybe too much reverb?

The drums are very prominent but not very bassy and I think they are hiding your vocals a little.

The female backing vocals comes through well.

Others on here will have better feedback re: the mix though.

cheers

Hi @jurgen - the collaboration thing was quite interesting. Because we were going to college every week and "exposing" our raw song ideas, we learned to trust each other and began to spark ideas off each other. The tutor had loads of interesting techniques to get us writing - such as giving us a one-word or simple phrase subject and getting us to write for 60 seconds, 3 minutes, 10 minutes - and then read it back. We often would start a song (individually or collectively) with a title pulled for a magazine or newpaper headline. At the end of term we were told to write a series of songs on the subject of summer for a performance together in 4 weeks time. That got the creative juices flowing!

For Big Screen, we each developed a list of words/thoughts connected with the cinema and together in the classroom came up with the initial draft lyrics. One of us led on making up a tune and then we put chords to it. We then went to the college studio and recorded it a few weeks later. Here' that version with Joanne singing if you're interested: https://soundcloud.com/steve-gray-songwriting/the-big-screen

Yes, I know my vocals have far too much reverb on - it was a deliberate effect though. Thanks for comments on the drums - I am still shaky on EQ, so all thoughts are appreciated.

Nice song @redmando ... I like the lyrics.

It has a really retro analog vibe. It's really refreshing.

And the laid back vocals are nice too.

That's interesting re: techniques for song writing. From memory I think ABBA used to write songs starting with a title and it worked pretty well for them.

cheers
