Black Dog

This is an extremely rough recording of a song about depression that I've been thinking about for a while now but just wrote. As rough as it is now, I feel like there's potential there. Let me know what you guys think!

I think this is a good song....and I really liked this particular a cappella performance of it. There is a serious spiritual thing that you get going here that definitely resonates and whatever you do with this you need to hold on to that.

I'm trying to imaging what kind of instrumentation might go with this tune.
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

I agree with Leonard.  There is a spiritual quality, in the blues tradition.  In terms of instrumentation, I'd say a simple bluesy acoustic guitar or piano.

There is a lot of feeling in your voice. I do not understand many of the things you say (it would be great if you put the lyrics) but your voice has the pulse of the song well.

Well @sully ..... all I can say is:

Songwriter, Keyboards, Arranger, Producer & Engineer for November Sound

November Sound is based on the Mother, Father & Son musical trio of Melissa, Bill & Will. I'm the father so anything I post will have my wife singing and/or my son playing percussion.

Thanks guys, appreciate your comments.

Black Dog  Lyrics
Theres a big black dog and hes dragging me down
to a deep dark cave, way under ground
and I don't know why he wont leave me alone
can somebody please give this dog a bone

Verse 1
I've been walking around with a big smile on my face
tryna pretend that I'm ok
there's a strain in my step something's holding me back
face to the ground
fuck, I'm under attack

Verse 2
Been crawlin around with dirt on my face
this dog at my feet just wont go away
feelin kinda tired
feelin kinda weak
then come  the teeth

Verse 3
Now I'm in that deep dark cave way underground
with this big black dog
yeah he drug me down
now I pray to God he wont leave me alone
cause there aint no way for me to go home

A nice piece of work @sully - I hope it's not autobiographical as we all want to steer clear of big black dogs if we can.

Anyway, I'm imagining blues piano in very much an early blues style.

It might be nice to end on a happier note as a contrast lyrically by suggesting maybe somebody has come along and thrown that dog a bone.
So there is a bit of hope and for the listener it takes them away from the "my baby left me" stereotype of blues styled music.

@sully  You have a good feel for the  blues- I enjoyed the demo. I`ll be back for the next round on this if you add some accompaniment.
Are you singing to a click track on the ear buds?

Thanks @MrBouzouki , no I've been rid of the black dog for a while, Now I've just gotta figure out how to get rid of his cousin the blue monkey of anxiety on my back lol. Would love to do some Piano on there but don't play, but working on doing some layered vocals to fill it out a bit, just gotta learn how to use the Garageband app :)

Thaks @robertkc , working on it :) no not singing to a click track.
