Breaking Ground (Collab Challenge)
on: December 15, 2019, 16:57:51
Hello Kitchenauts!

@Rachel_D and me are very happy to present our entry to the Kitchen's Collab Challenge!  :)
Rachel stumbled over an old 30 sec instrumental piece of mine from 7 years ago and came up with some lyrics and melody to it - and we just took it from there! We finally finished the last tweaks today, you can't believe how thrilled I am to finish a musical project that started all this time ago - thank you so much, @Rachel_D for making this possible and breathing life into it!

HERE is a link to the song, the lyrics are posted below. @Rachel_D will be much better than me at describing what the song is about!

We spent a couple of days just working on the mix, any clever tips on how to improve it are very much appreciated!

Breaking Ground

Verse 1
Close, yet far and in between
The lightningís got me going
To a place Iíve never been or seen
Stay wherever it might take you
Wherever thereís a way
I promise it wonít interfere

Chorus
Whoeverís standing will be known
And their reward is gonna show
And every moment that is gone
I say I will survive
And I canít stand where I can't see
Cos everywhere will disappear
And I donít know if itís the end or just the start

Verse 2
Down the rabbit hole and out
To face a world unknown
Stumbling onto foreign lands
So take another leap of faith,
Though fear has left me shaking
I close my eyes and you are there

Chorus
Whoeverís standing will be known
And their reward is gonna show
And every moment that is gone
I say I will survive
And I canít stand where I can't see
Cos everywhere will disappear
And I donít know if itís the end or just the start

Bridge
Itís bound to happen, worth a try
Am I the one whoís left behind?
Or is it now Iíll learn to fly and use my wings for the first time
A silhouette of unknown faces
Blurs my way and leaves no traces
Reaching out from the night sky
Escaping through the empty spaces on my mind

Chorus
Whoeverís standing will be known
And their reward is gonna show
And every moment that is gone
I say I will survive
And I canít stand where I can't see
Cos everywhere will disappear
And I donít know (I donít knowÖ)
And I canít stand where I can't see
Cos everywhere will disappear
And I donít know if itís the end or just the start
The start of something real

Wow @Michael and @Rachel_D this is soooo beautiful!!
Fantastic instrumental and wonderfully sung!!
You 2 should start a virtual band!!
Michael, one small pointer, my first impression was that Rachel's voice had a tad to much low-mids (sounds a bit like she's singing in a plastic-cup, which she (probably) isn't). Hope that was helpful..
Apart from that compiments about the mix/production.
Pleasure to listen to!!
Cheers!!

Wow!! Well done guys - this is fantastic! @Rachel_D - your vocal is stunning on this - you sound very cool indeed.. Very different to your solo stuff, with @Michael 's smooth and accomplished backing you're really letting rip with the vocal - love how you step up the melody in the second chorus. Super! Great lyrics - a really well-written and catchy song.. Wonderful stuff - you make a great team!! Hope that you do more together !

This is very good! Its not a surprise to hear @Rachel_D singing so well in this style ( I`ve only heard your poetic shorts with simple accompaniment before)- but, wow you sound so comfortable with the big production :pompom: :pompom:
The backing is subtle and well arranged @Michael -really like the way you changed to an almost reggae beat for the bridge.
I thought the percussion seemed a little far back in the mix in places.
Excellent work ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Nice work! I like the arrangement beat and melody.  The vocals are too loud though and sound very dry and separate when compared to the rest of the mix.

I would say give your ears a break and come back to it and you'll see what I mean, a reference track could be helpful if you're not using one.

Good song @Michael  and @Rachel_D . I like the instrumentation and Rachel, you sound amazing!!!

I'll agree with some of the comments on the mix.......tuck those vocals in a bit more and you'll have a real winner here.

Wow, thanks everyone for taking the time to listen :) :) :)

And a big thanks for all the pointers about the mix, they will be really valuable for the next version.

@Dara this is great advice, cheers!  ::thumb::
But could you maybe specify what you mean with a reference track?

@Michael @Rachel_D A nice and catchy tune. I quite like the counter intuitive rhythmical interaction between the guitar, drums and bass. As if reggae and funk were mating, but had a pop child.

Rachel's singing is quite good, but I may agree with some of the other commenters that her vocal might be lowered a tiny bit. I said 'may agree', because I'm not sure if doing so will improve the balance. Possibly you could just try out and see if it makes any sense?

@Michael I just mean pick an existing published track that you think sounds good!  probably best to use something from the genre, then drop it into your daw and level match it with your own track.

If it's a song that you know sounds good, then you can base your mix decisions around that for setting the levels of your own track.

Being a newbie in the Kitchen I am still overwhelmed by the quality of what I hear. Your song, @Michael and @Rachel_D , is a fine example. What a voice, Rachel, and what a nice musical production. Wrestling myself with my own mixes I find it still a little presumptuous judge those of others. And much depends on what headphones or monitors I am listening. Through my light easy listening ancient Sennheiser 414 your song sounds great, with my Sennheisers HD 280 Pro I notice that something in the vocals can be ameliorated. For me I would say it lacks a little clarity. But maybe it is the microphone used. Rachel's voice merits a good mic for sure.

I agree on the idea that @Rachel_D Ďs voice is worth a very good microphone.
I am really curious how you voice would sound like when a ribbon mic would be used. A very primitive mic in use in the 50ís. Think Jo Stanford, Doris Day. It gave the voice a slightly thicker, velvety sheen.

I bet is would sound marvelous!

And @Michael love the work and musicality you put in it. Great piece of work.
Love it.
Kind regards, Gus
