Wonderful performance. Highlights for me are Rachel's lush voice and the associate production (reading the comments above, I'm assuming that this has been tweaked since), the earthy slightly clipping guitar tone in the intro, verse and solo. Percussion is a bit busy for my taste but it's not distracting. Very strong entry!

Dear kitcheners,

First I would like to thank @Michael   for giving me the opportunity to collaborate with him and for his amazing work on this song, particularly  the brilliantly executed instrumental, intriguing combination of sounds, advice/ suggestions/ ideas on lyrics and constant inspiration! It was so exciting to see this song unravel bit by bit, a truly inspiring journey bursting with creativity  ::headphone:: .

….Here’s something about the lyrics and title:

This is from where it all started: https://soundcloud.com/michaelheider/unfinished-1
I sensed the themes of mystery/ unknown / energy / determination/ adventure on listening to it and the lyrics are built around those themes. They speak about someone’s journey into the unknown, sometimes life is full of decisions the outcomes of which are a mystery and it entails courage to take the “leap of faith” and face the challenges resulting from those decisions, and perseverance and determination in order to make the chosen journey work. But having a positive outlook will greatly contribute in determining the ultimate outcome/consequences of those decisions and belief in oneself, even when things are unclear, is the first step towards “survival”.

I tend to build visual images in my mind when it comes to lyrics, and when bringing out the theme of ‘unknowns’ and ‘mystery’ / “I can’t stand where I can’t see” I had this constant image of someone running over cracking/breaking ground almost like on thin ice or like is often seen in movies when at the end of an adventure story, in the main characters’ escape from some ancient structure/tomb he/she gets to run over unstable/collapsing ground… And that is how the title ‘Breaking ground’ came about.

… I am overwhelmed by your replies!! Thanks so much for listening! :) .. I finally have some time to reply to all of you! :)

@Dutchbeat  : Thanks so much for your constant support! :) I’m really glad that you enjoyed the vocal melody :D

@Mar T. : Thanks so much for your feedback, it means a lot coming from you! :) :) (ps. out of curiosity’s sake (me being a beginner with DAWs), how do you adjust the low-mids of a track?)

@Zedd  : Hi! I always enjoy hearing from you :) :) Thank you for your wonderful feedback! I’m glad that you noticed the change in the second chorus, that was a very fun melody-discovery during the course of the song-making process :)

@robertkc  : Thank you so much! That means a lot! I am mostly used to my small poem-songs and singing to such a bigger accompaniment was a challenge, and I tend to get self-conscious about it, questioning myself, being unsure whether I am stepping up the vocal enough, and so it’s great to hear that it works for you :) It’s interesting that you view the bridge as an ‘almost reggae beat’, I wasn’t perceiving it like that before, but now that you mention it, I cannot stop viewing it that way every time I re-listen to the song!

@Dara  : Thanks a lot for your constructive feedback :) Out of curiosity, which reference track would you consider suitable/reccomend to ‘assess’ the levels of this particular track?

@Leonard Scaper : Thanks so much! :) You’re fianlly getting to hear me singing a long-er arrangement this time round! :) I greatly appreciate your comment :) .

@Pleudoniem   : Thank you for your comment, it’s really interesting how you described the way you perceive the style of this song! Thanks for listening! :)

@Charlie  : Hi, thanks for popping over and for your feedback. Thanks for pointing out the mic, mine is not too sophisticated and I’ve had it for a while so I do consider upgrading. What mic kind/ type do you suggest?

@LePlongeur  : Thanks for your comment :) It’s really interesting that you mentioned the 50s ribbon mic, I tend to like how those artists sound. With regards to mics, can you suggest a suitable specific brand/model which is available on the market? (I tend to come to a loss when choosing mics for my voice)

@Mora Amaro La Loba   : Hey! Thanks for listening and for sending us your feedback :) I am really glad that you like it and that you found it catchy! :)

@DanJames  : Thanks so much for listening and for your positive feedback! :D

@Michael  & @Rachel_D  -  amazing! Supreme pop sound and vocals and writing!
I like this line a lot
"A silhouette of unknown faces
Blurs my way and leaves no traces"

"adjust the low-mids of a track?" if need be you could find the EQ setting per track.  EQ stands for equalizing, you can adjust relative volume per frequency band. https://blog.landr.com/eq-basics-everything-musicians-need-know-eq/
recommending https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Music_Works "How music works", book by David Byrne.

@oorlab - thanks so much for your feedback. I am very glad that you noticed that line :)

... and Wow! - that link is really informative, the science behind music / music making is really fascinating! (A few years back I bought this book : it is mostly about acoustics and it's link to architecture - https://books.google.com.mt/books/about/Concert_Halls_and_Opera_Houses.html?id=_jLTBwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button&redir_esc=y ) ...I find the aspects behind DAWs equally fascinating. I'll definitely be reading more about the subject! :) I guess you've helped me formulate my new year's resolution for this year! :)

Coming to this a bit late @Michael and @Rachel_D - so a lot of comments already.

I've not much more to add other than I really liked this
