Breathe (Zedd & JB collab)
on: November 18, 2017, 17:24:24
« Last Edit: November 19, 2017, 09:49:27 by Jambrains »
Yet another @Jambrains/@Zedd collaboration under the Ashes for Dreams banner.
This is a very early Jambrains song that I originally published almost exactly 3 years ago.
Zedd liked it so we re-worked the lycris a bit, made it a duet, re-recorded some parts and re-mixed it.

https://soundcloud.com/ashesfordreams/breathe

All I can do
is sit and watch the sunset
waiting for my world to come undone

A great flood of outrage
Swept all reason a way
It overthrew logic
Let ignorance take centre stage
A maze of emotions
Where sense of direction is lost
A fear fed by anger
Demanding change at all cost

I just want you to breathe
New life into me
I'm tired of the chaos around
In you I have found
The peace that I need
When you hold out your hand
I am suddenly calm
My fear falls away
You put hope in its place
You help me to breathe

When hearsay and rumours
Are taken for facts and for truth
And ages of wisdom
Renounced by the passion of youth
Views are distorted
Opinion and mindset askew
And the weak voice of reason
Is lost in a sea of untruths

I just want you to breathe
New life into me
I'm tired of the chaos around
In you I have found
The peace that I need
When you hold out your hand
I am suddenly calm
My fear falls away
You put hope in its place
You help me to breathe

All I can see is the afterglow
of violence
I'm dragged down in the undertow
of lies
All I can do
is sit and watch the sunset
waiting for my world to come undone

I just want you to breathe
New life into me
I'm tired of the chaos around
In you I have found
The peace that I need
When you hold out your hand
I am suddenly calm
My fear falls away
You put hope in its place
You help me to breathe
Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart
My land's only borders lie around my heart

Love the grandiose piano arrangement at the start!
Man, that change up into Am is so surprising and theatrical. It's all pretty fascinating the way you put it together: the trading voices, trading instruments, changing key - Its like it just cuts to different scenes of the movie.  :)

Seriously good! I love the dynamic that you two create together and this song really showcases that.

The juxtaposition of piano and electric guitar is wonderfully orchestrated and really makes this song special.

I have to say that my favorite passage starts with @Zedd soaring vocals at 3:30 and goes right into @Jambrains searing electric guitar work.

I also have to say that the ending left me wanting some other, more special way to end such a good song.

This is great stuff!  ;D  Love the theatrical (epic) aspects of it, the piano work is really good too!!  :D

Only thing I didn't like was the fade out...like @Leonard Scaper I wanted something else.  ;)

It sounds like a song from some kind of rock musical, it certainly soars to epic proportions too. Very good duet, although I did particularly like the section featuring the lone female vocal - that was very assured - following the quiet piano break.

The piano playing is great, the guitar soloing - well maybe a bit old school for me, but that is entirely down to personal taste. If this is your thing, then the guitaring certainly rocks!

There was a tiny nit-pick for me on the second chorus where the female vocal lags a bit behind the male 'I'm tired of the chaos around', making it sound more of a live take than a studio cut, but it is great elsewhere. Easily fixed of course.

As others have commented the fade out is the least strong element - especially as it comes so abruptly at the end of a normal chorus without any repetition going on to assist the fade. You have built up this great big epic production mega-song and so I was expecting a sustained note vocal duet harmony or something at the end, or whatever else with your wild musical imagination I am sure you could come up with. As you have gone 'theatrical' maybe something along the lines of the ending to Bowies's 'Life On Mars' comes to my mind.

That said, yes what an unusual number - in a v good way - and so enjoyable a listen! It's a winning formula, this collaboration. ::thumb::
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Great guitar playing throughout. When the guitar first kicked in I found the tone a little bit thin but it seemed to blend better as the song went on. To be a bit nit-picky, my personal preference would be to clean the vocals a little bit (duck or smooth some of the harder consonants and maybe take the reverb down a bit on the female vox) and slightly balance the vocals and guitar a bit better during the first chorus (instruments up a bit and vocals down a little).

I love the imagination of this song. The structure and instrumentation and chord changes are all unconventional and unexpected in a good way. Kept hold of my interest til the end. The fade out should be a little smoother. I would suggest repeating the chorus again and fade it more gradually.

Really interesting song!

Hi @Jambrains ,
thanks for sharing this song.
I like the arrangements. And also this "rock musical"(@MichaelA) feeling.
The only thing which does not convinced me (I listened to the song only two times, though) is how drums and bass works together; to me it is like the bass is going somewhere else as the drums, and/or vice versa. Maybe it is because the bass is more in front of the listener then the drums...Or maybe the drums have much more compression then the bass...Or it is the kick that doesn't "work" with the rhythm bass part... don't know. Anyhow, it is just my feeling about it.
I liked a lot the part (1.47 - 2.00) where, for a few seconds, you give us the feeling of a heavy rock band with guitar and drums.

Thanks to all for the feedback, the ending will be reworked in some way for sure (no fade) and I will also consider all input re the mix.
Once again, a big thanks to each and everyone of you!  :)

Hey guys, nice to hear another track fresh out from your kitchen!
I think you 2 can release a complete album in the meantime!

Another nice fusion of folk and rock, enjoyed the listen!
@Jambrains, your voice and singing is still improving, great to hear that! @Zedd, you know
I love your singing sound/style.
I liked that quiet piano part for a break, and loved the buildup after the break.
Wonderful solo!
Can't fault anything in the production, I know the choices you make @JB, so I cannot
add useful help. Very well done pro-sounding production!
Fantastic lyrics, I could relate to the words immediately.
Phrases like 'Let ignorance take centre stage' and 'And ages of wisdom
Renounced by the passion of youth' for example..

Well done guys, respect!
:mart:
