Can you hear AC/DC performing this song?

Hello Everyone,

A producer approached one of my collaborators with a project... it involves Brian Johnson, the lead singer for AC/DC. They're looking for a "smash hit" (aren't they all)? I worked up some lyrics and Alexandre Zindel worked up the music.

The producer emailed us back saying, "Sorry no - that sounds like Get Back by the Beatles with a singer who has just woken up and hasn't energised yet."

Do you agree?

Lyrics:

   It's A Mutual Thing

Verse 1:
You walked through the room...
we all watched you pass...
and all of our thoughts
were as clear as the glass.
But then when you caught my eye...
I knew it was true...
what you're doing to me
I am doin' to you...

Chorus 1:
It's a mutual thing.
It's a mutual thing.
All Hell's broken open...
It's a mutual thing.

Verse 2:
My fever is boilin'
from the lust you ignite...
my temperature's risin'
to a new Fahrenheit...
and I can see from your eyes
when I look deep into those blues
that what you're doin' to me
I am doin' to you.

Chorus 2:
It's a mutual thing.
It's a mutual thing.
Sweet God Almighty
It's a mutual thing.

Bridge:
All of our clothes
have been torn into tatters
but now we're skin to skin
none of that matters...

Repeat chorus 2:
I'm a lyricist seeking music writers to work with.

I'm not an expert on AC/DC ... they're not one of my favourite hard rock bands to be fair, but here is my 10 cents.

If you want AC/DC then musically it needs to be riff driven and that doesn't come across with this track. Malcolm was the main riff machine I believe and I think he was credited with many of the famous ones.  Both guitars playing the same to reinforce the riff is a key element to my ears.
In a way their is quite a simplistic style but it's hard to do simple well like they do. The track probably sounds too pretty for the AC/DC style overall.

Lyrically it seems in the right sort of ballpark for but I think the lyrics are often intimately tied to the riff rhythmically, so one informs the other.

Still a good song to my ears but not in their discrete style if that is what you are after.

Hi Stan,

I do think this is quite catchy song @smajor. That "It's a mutual thing" works well as a catchy line.

But for me, it doesn't sound like AC/DC - it's too soft rock (nothing wrong with soft rock if that's what you're going for).

I think @MrBouzouki gives a good explanation that I agree with. I would also add that the lead guitar is too much when the vocals are on - it's almost doesn't stop throughout the song and seems to be competing with the vocals.

The words are really good for the genre and I think with a harder edge to the song it would suit Brian Johnson's gravelly vocals.

cheers

Jurgen

Hi @Dutchbeat , @MrBouzouki , @Jurgen

Thank you for the in-depth critiques. Exactly what we're looking for.

Neither Alexandre or I are hard rock/metal aficionados. We took this on as a bit of a lark because the opportunity presented itself.

The message I'm getting here is that we've created a "catchy" song, but not one that really fits AC/DC's style.

Neither of us feels motivated to pursue AC/DC authenticity so I guess we'll market the song we've got.

Thanks again for the great comments.

Later,
Stan

The trick that was used was a very very strong riff. I agree with @MrBouzouki .
But the magic was that the riff was played twice, extremely tight and extremely panned left and right.
Listen to highway to hell. Good example of what I mean.

Ac/DC was not entirely my thing. But I have to be careful since the riff master lives in  the same country as I do. And I liked the riffs very much, but I didnít like the yelling, and since we all think that simplicity is the easiest thing to do....

I like your lyrics far more than the music. I think (sorry sorry sorry) it is sort of ZZTop without the beards and without the volume on 11.
The lack of young women is sort of compensated by the picture of the suggestive looking lady. But only sort of.

I like it as it is, but itís far too tame to rank with highway to hell kind of stuff.
Too decent and far too sophisticated.
But then, you are mr nice guy, arenít you, @smajor ?
Not enough gore and guts, broken beer bottles and needle marks.
But whatever these people say, we love you all the more for it.
Kind regards, Gus

LOL LOL @LePlongeur ,

You've got our number, both me and Alexandre. We're not exactly balls to the wall outlaw assholes. And our heavy metal songs suffer from this lack of incivility.

On the other hand this attempt at slumming does seem to have produced a song that a number of people like. So it may not be a total lose. Perhaps we can forgo  the "gore and guts, broken beer bottles and needle marks".

Stan

@smajor I agree with the not quite AC/DC comments and like the lyrics more than the music...which probably means you could be succesful with this,(my musical taste running in inverse relationship to the charts )
Glad you have thick enough skin to deal with dismissive producers like this one!

Right!
What the name of the Norwegian girl singing:

I'd audition

Takes some stamina to go on after all the flack has quieted down!

I completely agree with @robertkc, @smajor
Love the lirics!

I think you could get this one rocking harder, Stan. Maybe pick up the pace a little and  get your singer to throw some more frenetic energy into the performance.

I don't think it sounds at all like "Get Back".

As a song in an of itself I really like it just as it is.
