Hi, I've made another version: https://soundcloud.com/johan-van-den-berg/caught-in-light-version-2

In short: deleted the few bars guitar in the intro, fixed a couple of lyric things, tried to get the mix in balance. Still a lot of emphasis on the guitars kicking in, I like that. :-)
I'm still limited when it comes to producing, but hey, there's more to learn.

Any better, @Leonard Scaper, @rockinrob, @junemay, @CrystalSuzy, @Dutchbeat, @Olbigead, @Jurgen?

Cheers!

You really have a wonderful balance in the mix now. Nice work.

You might consider a touch of de-essing on the vocal but that would be a taste thing.

@ajwvdberg, I really like the vibe of this song.  The organ really sets a tone.  On my end, it sounds as though your kick is distorting (on this recording) every time it hits.  It could have happened when you uploaded it to SoundCloud.  I always like to listen to my uploads after I put them up because sometimes the sounds changes drastically.  I can also agree with @Leonard Scaper about the deessing.  You may want to try to add just a little 120-160 to give the vocal just a little more chest as well.  Overall it's a nice song and I really like the story line.  I get the visuals when I listen to it.

Beautiful song that paints a picture.

The lyrics grip you and make you think what the song is about.

A haunting song...

A good listen

Wow I'm late at the party!
Nice one @ajwvdberg , I loved all the different sounds you used, especially that smokey organ (with a flanger/phazer effect?). Very nice guitar play, both clean (chorussy) and cruchy. Sounds like listening to a live band. I liked your vocals and backvocals as well!
I still have some problems with my ears, I promised you some production tips earlier. This song doesn't need them imo, just because it captures a kind of 'live' performance, unless that was not your intention   ;)
Well done, thanks for sharing, that was a very nice listen!

Hey @ajwvdberg I really enjoyed this.  I like how you went about the production, a live performance feeling, recorded the good old fashion way.    :)

Thank you all for the feedback, @Mar T., @Dutchbeat, @Dara, @Movin Flavour, @revivalchoir, @rockinrob, @Leonard Scaper.
I'm still learning and trying to a slightly better result. Spoke to @MonoStoneMusic a couple of times and he had some really useful tips as well. Learning to use the compressor now. Difficult, but I am enjoying it. Also, he said to aim for a certain production, keep a song in mind that you want it to sound like. One think led to another and he is kindly helping me on the production. I wouldn't be surpised if after version three is released things will speed up dramatically, bringing me to a festival near you next summer.

Nice opening but to me that guitar at 0.27 is way to up front.  And almost a minute of intro may be on the long side. Dig the vocal processing! Kick/bass is solid but the snare is a bit "card box" sounding. The strummed, dirt guitar on one side during the chorus is a bit too up front and makes the mix "unbalanced" i.e. "leaning" to one side. You could probably raise the arp guitar that is on the other side but then the guitrar would be way to loud. And even if you back off the guitar the vocals during (the great) chorus would need to come up I think.
Just my very personal opinions of course, nothing right or wrong when it comes to music or mixing

Thanks @Jambrains!Yes, the first version was a bit off balance and the guitar in the intro was ditched in version 2: https://soundcloud.com/johan-van-den-berg/caught-in-light-version-2

But version 2 has a couple of new issues, the kick has a bit of distortion. I think @MonoStoneMusic has a clear idea on where to take the song and I'm convinced he'll make it way better than I can.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and reply.

Intriguing lyrics but I'm a sucker for songs that leave something to the imagination and this does that beautifully.  Does the production need anything? well, if you're releasing it to the world for profit and marketability, yeah, if not just a few tweaks here and there. That comes with time. Again, production qualities are subjective.

Like it a lot!

Thanks @Mr Sydney. No, there is no commercial aim, that would be silly. But I am trying to learn and grow. And this song just seems to hold a little extra. I'm not that good in producing, so I'm trying to learn more. It's such great fun to do!
