This is @Pleudoniem & @siennalittle's contribution to the Songwriter's Kitchen Challenge, the last one in 2019. Knowing that we work in very different ways and that we are used to very different styles, it was an arduous task, and I hope you like the result. Sienna Little, who wrote and sang the lyric, chose to reflect on the idea that her baby girl, who is now still very little, will grow bigger. Will she then remember what it was like when the little Lady was still little?

The song has a jazzy feel and it is in 6/8.

Days Go By

Everything’s changed
in the blink of an-

Eyes like mine
and a gorgeous
Smile lights up
the darkest-

Days go by
I try
to keep you close
So I won’t forget
I won’t forget

It’s a miracle
how you
Shining beauty
and a vibrant,
Personally,
you amaze me
Every-

My little Charlotte

Days go by
I try
to keep you close
So I won’t forget
How it felt at the start

You grow and bloom
just like a-
Blossoms and flowers
bringing the color
Full of love
for you every-

Days go by
I try
to keep you close
So I won’t forget
How it felt at the start

This took a while for me to get into- by the time the vocal adlibs and last "little Charlotte" came in I stopped trying to hear everything going on and the different styles intertwined and I really enjoyed your collaboration!
The song`s lyrics and sincere jazzy vocal are a highlight for me
I can hear how much work went into this- will have another listen .

This is a beautiful and musically intruiging song. Since I'm new here, I don't understand yet how this 'colab' works but the result is excellent. First class vocals and accompaniment. It's hard to immagine that you recorded this seperately, by exchaging tracks. Everything is so well timed. I am myself too much bound to metrum and standard musical lines which I consider a restriction. What you do makes me dream, even more so with the intimate subject for this song. It also brings me back to the seventies when I had quite a few vinyl records with comparable music. The beauty of it is that you can listen to it time and again and hear new things. Thanks! And of course I wish the little Charlotte a happy and healthy life.

@robertkc @Charlie Yes, admittedly, this is not a very easy song. The 6/8 is one thing, as is the use of melodic minors and the maj11 chords - yes eeeh, jazzy  :P Possibly, using an easy ditty might have been a safer bet for a challenge, but we thought this might be an interesting cookie to chew on as wel :) I guess you may need to listen to it a couple of times, indeed. At least we hope that you will do this

Intricate beauty and very creative collaboration, @Pleudoniem  & @siennalittle  - I was immediately intruiged to hear more of Sienna's work at https://soundcloud.com/sienna-little.
This collaboration challenge sure brings out unexpetcted juxtapositions.

@Charlie  - collaborations can be done in any number of ways. One writes some lyrics, another one sets up a beat and then you start tweaking and pingponging until something emerges. Sometimes it can take monts, sometimes within a few days there is already something to be presented.
It is always fun.

Wow! What a cool combination here. The jazzy presentation sets up Sienna's vocals so nicely. The "Little Charlotte" lines are SO strong and I love the scat singing stuff at the end.

Great production @Pleudoniem and @siennalittle !!!!

Yeah also thought the last  third of the song is a blast when Sienna melts together with the sound at the end!
The lyrics are nice and sensitive.
A dynamical collab, well  done ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Wow guys! Just love the collaborations that little Kitchen of ours produces - this is a prime example! Such an intriguing sound, that keeps the listener interested up to the last beat. And then for another listen. Repeat.

I really wasn't expecting a jazz number combined with that autotune effect on @siennalittle 's vocals (which btw sound great as ever),  but I think it is exactly that effect that makes the vocals basically blend seemlessly into the clarinet (I think?) in the background.A really really cool and creative idea.

The lyrics are quite clever, I think. With one line essentially continuing just when the last one was about to end - I hope you know what I mean :D   Anyway, well done!

I am not so good with jazzy time signatures, so I just tried to lean back and let the song flow over me - which worked really well for me!
Love the drums, both the jazzy pattern and the sound of the drums themselves. (Are you using brushes?) Generally, the production sounds really clear and professional to me, great job here.

My favourite part was also the last third or quarter, starting around 3:20, the vocals sound almost improvised, like a jam session :)

And last but not least, of course all the best to little Charlotte!

[When i finished typing I must have pressed a wrong button or something and had to start over again, my apologies if this shows up as a double post...]

@Michael Yes, they are brushes, or rather, they are sticks, but I use Superior Drummer connected to a series of drum pads (I have a KAT3 drum kit here). It means that I can change the sound if needs be. For a jazzy song, those brushes sounded just ok.

It was a bit of toying around with that autotune, but I agree, the effect is nice, isn't it? It makes her sound much more dreamy, and it is a dreamy song, after all.

Yes, the abrupt continuations in the lyric were intentional :)

Actually, it's an oboe, and to be more exact, it is a Mellotron oboe sample. The bowed standup is a real one, as is the standup bass, and the guitar - and of course the vocals :)

Wow @Pleudoniem and @siennalittle  I enjoyed every second of this song.. I'm certainly not a jazz expert, so I
cannot possibly say something useful other than that this was pure pleasure to listen to.
HQ arranged instrumental (Eric I suppose I can give you the credits for this)
Beautful jazzy vocal sound and interpretation.. You must be proud of your little girl @Sien..
Immediately reposted this one.

Good luck in the challenge voting/ranking process!!
Cheers,

Mar T.

Hi @Pleudoniem and @siennalittle
Wow!!! Yes, a very different style to you!!! Great collaboration, great, it reminds me sometimes Gentle Giant, Canterbury Scene. National Health.... You both reached a very special atmosphere and the mix is really good to my ears.
The instrumental parts are wonderful!

Congratulations!!!!! ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

wow, this collab must have required a lot of coordination and communication! there's lots going on and I'm impressed that you have managed to marry your 2 distinct styles successfully. Probably a little too sophisticated for my simple ear, but another very strong entry for the challenge.

Thanks for all the kind comments!
It surely was a challenge, but a very learnfull one.
Eric had a lot of patience with me ;-)
And I think we're both pretty proud with the result.

Just brilliant @Pleudoniem and @siennalittle   !!!
Not taking away from anyone else but this type of entry is so atypical of a "songwriting" challenge …in that often "songwriting" suggests a simple song accompanied by a guitar …..that's why I love this so much …..  here you have a nicely advanced harmonic palette, a melody using the upper extensions of the harmonic structure as well, a bassoon counter-melody ( too bad @OscoBosco doesn't give this a listen with all his bassoon writing and all ….  :)  …. ) This brings to mind Joe Lovano's larger works and in some ways Herbie Hancock's later stuff of which I am a big fan. Similarly here we have non-jazz instruments and the voice acting as a complex, intertwined, contrapuntal jazz orchestra.
Good show both!
