Cover Challenge 2018 - All of These Promises
on: August 16, 2018, 04:01:20
Most of you know I try to avoid the "songs for review" section as much as possible. I'm required to put this up for review to enter the 2018 Kitchen Cover Challenge .... and I'm told I can't have it both ways..... so what's fair is fair right?  ;) I love the Kitchen Challenges because it makes me create music that I never would have...now that's a win right there!  :)

If you're new around here I'll just warn you: some people like our music, a lot of people hate it and a number of people tolerate it ... mainly because we are very generous with SC reposts and Twitter shares!  ;) So if you can tolerate our music, like a song so I know you're real, follow us and we'll try our best to be helpful. We are a mother, father and son musical trio, we live in the woods in the smallest town in the smallest state in the USA and .....our music sounds the way it sounds.

I hereby invoke the name of the great @Olbigead ! He gave us permission to cover his masterpiece : "All of These Promises" . We don't see him in the kitchen all that much anymore but he is still creating amazing work! Seriously, if you don't already, go follow him right now! (then return to this thread so you can listen to the song....) His music is magical.

On our YouTube channel we cover popular songs of the day......but to actually finally cover a song with real meaning? Just awesome! Thanks @Olbigead for this opportunity.

Here is his original:
https://soundcloud.com/olbigead/all-of-these-promises

Will was away touring the midwest with the drum corps. He had one break for a few days where I quickly recorded some of his snare drumming .... so the percussion in this is "dreams of drum corps" style. (If you don't know what drum corps is that's likely because it's more of an American thing .... but I did get to see one open class group from the Netherlands performing in Indiana) It's tough to work without Will.

Here is our cover:

all right then, cheers everyone!  :)

November Sound is based on the Mother, Father & Son musical trio of Melissa, Bill & Will. I'm the father so anything I post will have my wife singing and/or my son playing percussion.

I know how you feel about reviews.....so I'll just say that I like what you did with this song a lot. You took the wonderfully understated emotion of the original and energized it a bit in NS style. Melissa sounds great and I enjoyed listening to the entire song.

I like this version

I think the piano arpeggio actually works better than guitar to be honest.

@Bill from November Sound. Well u went ahead and did it and invoked OBE! So here I am!

This is what @Mar T. and the kitchen cover competitions are all about. A wonderful reimagination. There are even new chords in here that I would like to borrow myself! a cover of a cover! And for the record, although Bill doesn't make much of November Sound, let me tell u they are all v. gifted musicians and they did this cover with zero help from yours truly! This song, more than most OBE songs, I have always found difficult to get right. Its so great to hear somebody else taking it somewhere new!

Congrats Bill, Melissa and Will!

P.S. Unusually for an OBE song, it did start out life on a piano, so @MrBouzouki funny you picked up on that for the arpeggio.

I liked the original to begin with. And I like it still.
But with a magicianís twist of NSís hands (all three of them) out comes something with a hammering-it-home piano and a heart stopping a cappella....
How can anyone not love such a piece of music.
I am ready to give it a spin again
And probably again.
Itís going to be sooooooooo difficult when voting time comes along.
Kind regards, Gus

Hey @Bill from November Sound

Because I do also know that you are not too keen for a review, I simply post a bunch of smileys...

...and one of the best things about your participation is that you brought @Olbigead back to the kitchen! Hooray! ;D

Thanks @Leonard Scaper , @MrBouzouki , @Dutchbeat , @LePlongeur  and @Mark Luto  :)

@Olbigead says I never got any help from him ....I sure did...... let me tell you I studied this song! I listened to this song over and over again! His music has so much depth. I just kept noticing more and more details that I wanted to try to highlight in our cover.
Plus - It's scary to cover someone's song and know they'll actually be listening to it.

Oh, @Dutchbeat , you know that dramatic break in the song? There's a story behind it.....

Hypnotic and delightful, terrific interpretation - the purity of the vocal delivery being the highlight for me! Once again... ::thumb::
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Thanks @MichaelA !

Okay @Dutchbeat here goes: So, I got this screaming good deal on some new String VST sounds and I was so excited about them. That entire section had already had this exquisite string arrangement going on ... just voice and strings. When I got these new string sounds I mixed them to perfection!!! It was so awesome! 8) Then this very wise person who is also my wife and my lead singer says, "Is this song about the strings or is it about the message? It sounds like you got new strings and you're just cramming them in there for the sake of using them."  :o Wait, what? Kind of as a joke I mute the string tracks entirely and play it, "Does this sound better?" >:D I think this is so extreme that we'll just want the strings back. ::) Then I realize - it actually does sound better! I mean it is so dramatic and it goes with the words:

Take me from this space
Take me out of this crowd
To a wide and empty space
Where I can think out loud
                                    - Olbigead

What better way to accentuate this message than to just have it clearly stated? I just left the strings out.  :)

What a great story @Bill from November Sound ! Kill your darlings, right? ;D

I bet it was the right decision. But anyway, you made me wonder how those strings (and your arrangement) sound. Is there a chance youĎll share that version with us, too? As a private track? For educational reasons...?

Cheers,
Mark

Hey @Bill from November Sound , that is so beautiful.. I'm in awe..
Of course I have to mention that I love @Olbigead (Obbie)'s original track, and good to hear you were generous to let others play with it..
And then Bill, Will and Melissa are the perfect team to recreate this song!
I love everything about this re-invention. Beautiful instrumentation/arrangement Bill, and well done on the drums Will!
Melissa, your voice reminds me of Gwen Stefani, love that vibrato, sounds natural and not forced. Wonderfully sung.
And when we combine  Bill, Will and Melissa we get a complete package. Love that pause/silence near the end.. It takes guts to claim space to get attention.. Of course many creators try to draw in attention by playing louder and louder to a climax. But this works even better.. And you still succeeded to give the louder OBE bits a special place (loooove the backvox as well btw!!). So I guess I mean : Chapeau for the dynamics in the arrangement!
Very well done guys, looooved to listen to your entry!

Cheers!
