Days of Love and Roses
on: September 02, 2018, 13:00:19
A new version of one of my oldies.

The conflict now is over
And only I am free
There is nothing left to bind me
But memories, reminding me
That I must go out and find
Somebody else to sympathise with me
I must go out and find another girl

The loneliest days are ended
And all thoughts of love are gone
I have counted up my losses
And find I can go on if I can find
Somebody else to sympathise with me
I must go on out and find another girl

Days of love and roses, coffee, unmade skies
Are all very fine
But when they go, they leave a bitter taste
Like the remenance of fine wine

And so, I have made my mind up
To leave some truth behind
Although I may hurt somebody
I'll not try to be unkind when I find
Somebody else who can sympathise with me
Then I'll go on out and find another girl
Today I'm only one day older. Do you think my hair's turned grey?

Hey Steve @redmando ,

It must be ages since I heard a song from you! And I'm glad you posted this one. I enjoyed it very much! ::headphone::

I enjoyed this @redmando

It's one of those odd songs where the initial instrumentation and tempo suggest a positive upbeat song that is then countered by the lyric.
Even the obviously minor sections sound hopeful so this dichotomy is interesting to my ears. I guess the subject of the song is about moving on and  getting over a negative experience and  so in that way the mood is correct.

Are you using SUS chords at times ? It sounds like it and it's a particular stylistic thing that pops up in my acoustic playing too.

It's good to revisit some old songs. I have books full of them that I need to start working though at some point.

Nice job overall

Well it's catchy too. I just went downstairs to make a cuppa and I was singing the melody as I busy doing stuff.

Thanks for listening @Dutchbeat , @Mark Luto  and @MrBouzouki .

I think I passed the Mr Bouzouki Whistle Test? I appreciate your summation of the song - I hadn't really thought about it much since it was written -  but you have got it spot on.

Again, I hadn't thought about the chords too much either. When I wrote it I didn't know any music theory, so just made the shapes up. Looking at it now, the riff just descends down down the neck with a made-up shape (9th fret 4th string, 8th on 3rd, 7 on 2nd and 9 on top) - so I think it is Bsus2, Asus2, Gsus2  then F.

In my recent songwriting I tend to use (overuse?) the open Asus2 a lot on both guitar and dulcimer - it's got a lovely ring to it. Dsus2 it nice too.

Get your old songbooks back out @MrBouzouki  - you never know what gems you might redicover.

Sounds wonderful. I get a bit of a Cure meet early Pink Floyd vibe...
Liking the break around 2.18 - though something seems odd in the beat there.

Thanks for your comments @Neal and @oorlab . Yeah, my drum programming takes a few wrong turns at times but in this case I think it makes for a quirky little hook. One day I will learn to drum properly (!).

I love it @redmando ! It's so groovy! ( wait is that what they said back in the 70's  ???   ... if not then get down with your bad self..... ::)  ... actually I'm thinking my commentary is falling apart here ....   :) ...  ) Anyway, it's cool.

I'm digging this going back to the future thing. Go back to an old song, fix it up and re-release it in modern times knowing now what you didn't know then.

Cool little guitar hook! And, the actually song makes for a surprise for me.... with the title I was imagining a "Days of Wine and Roses" nostalgic jazzy kind of thing. But, no, it has more of a "move on from the bad experiences of the past" kind of message.

Good show.

Hi @redmando ,

yes, a lot of 70s vibes here in this song. Sounds very good on my laptop speakers. The guitar sometimes is not 100% w.r.t. the drums in case you care ;-)

Thanks for your listening and comments @Bill from November Sound  and @junemay - I'll give the guitar / drums sync another listen, thanks for letting me know. I may have to sack the drummer - oh, that's me.  ???
