Deck of Cards
on: December 02, 2018, 22:46:34
Hi there fellow Kitchensongwriters
here is a track I have been working on, on & off the last few months. Thanks to @Pleudoniem for comments on an earlier version.

Deck of cards

My friend, serene
the world may seem,
but a storm is on the rise.

Birds are fleeing,
that's whaty I'm seeing
when I  watch these yellow skies.

On this journey,
on our travels,
we have to cut out all this fear

Chorus : So shuffle this deck of cards

Here's to good times
in the sunshine
the future never stays the same

On the lookout
for an endgame
on this ever running train

Chorus  So shuffle this deck of cards

Smarter living
sands are shifting
tracks are moving all the time

Where's the compass
in our distress
showing us a straighter line.

Chorus:   So shuffle this deck of cards

Listening to this in the studio just before closing it down for the day....what a great mix this is.

This is a very pleasant listen......so much going on. I LOVE the change-up at 2:00.

Really good song. I love your style. It's always a really nice musical ride. Going to put it on the monitors now and listen while I start dinner.

If I interpret correctly, there is a slight difference between the light footed music and the somewhat brooding text.
But it could very well be that you chose this approach.
I like the song very much.
You always have a surprising way of tackling the song.
Kind regards, Gus

Thanks @LePlongeur  Gus: yes, the text has some darker undertones, but the message could be that once you shuffle the cards you can start again - so despite words like distress and endgame, I still think it is an optimistic text.
Cheers - @Leonard Scaper  - I sure would like to know what you can hear on proper monitors. I mixed it with headphones, and once in a while checking on my simple room monitors. So I guess some tweaking in the tonal balance overall could be done yet...

It sounded great to me from out in the kitchen. Listening like that is kind of like listening in mono as the sound is coming out of the studio and down a hallway. I always check my mixes that way. Nothing jumped out to me as being unbalanced from that perspective.

Really enjoyable song.

Totally dig this! Cool, good dynamics (ebb/flow), well performed and I love those synth lines that adds just the right amount of spice to it. Mix sounds fine at my end, well done indeed!

@oorlab  I enjoyed this .The arrangement is very cool -you really thought out that changeup into the guitar break and there are nice synth touches throughout. Good vocals too.
The quiet ending sounds a bit tentative, otherwise it sounds well cooked to me ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Great song @oorlab  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

This brings to mind some big artists I like. I'm getting the same kind of vibes from this song as I get from listening to let's say E.L.O. and Tom Petty without a direct comparison to how they sound. Like how the mix is dynamic.... it feels complete... and  great!  ::Hoss::

(Now I have to listen to it again...)

Unmistakeably an @oorlab production, subtle groove, interesting vocals and always engaging instrumentation.

The vibe is quite understated and I like how you momentarily break out by contrast into more animated phases just for a while, then return into the main vibe. Very cool.
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Unmistakeably an @oorlab production,

I agree. I'm just back in for another listen while I have the headphones on.

I really like the electric guitar work....lots of different tones, each saying the right thing at the right time and in the perfect way.

many thanks @Leonard Scaper @MichaelA  @Layerson  @robertkc @Jambrains  @Lane  @Dutchbeat @LePlongeur
muchas gracias  for your feedback - greatly appreciated!
Will try to figure out if the ending can be made less tentative ( I admit I had to look that up, in dutch 'voorlopig' - preliminary)...
cheers

@oorlab  Maybe  my comment on the ending was a bit obscure. That full circle, repeat of the first verse- suits the ebb and flow of the song. It sounds fine to go out quietly, but  maybe putting a delay or echo on "a storm is on the rise" would work  to  leave that line as a stronger final impression.
I like this !

Robert
