Deja Vu
on: October 13, 2020, 12:21:07
Now that everyone seems to be living in Groundhog Day it seemed a good time to record an old song of mine "Deja Vu". A bit like Hotel California, the Deja Vu is a pub which you keep returning to. Done in folk-rock style, the tune is a traditional reel "King of the Fairies".

Today I'm only one day older. Do you think my hair's turned grey?

The start immediately reminded me of The Cure's Killing an Arab, or possibly the Clash. But then, I think they could have made songs like this, except possibly for the voice. But when you say it is an older song, possibly it is that old already?

I think I'd lower the voice and the e-guitar tune a tiny bit, but that may be just a taste thing. Well done. It works.

It could as well be that I am more of a ‘I take it as they come’ type oflistener.
And I like what I hear.
I cherish the differences. That’s what it makes all worth while.
And  do I have to tell you that I like it a lot? @redmando
Kind regards, Gus

- thanks for commenting @Pleudoniem . I will seek out that Cure track as I don't know it. Yeah, I wrote this song sometime in the 80's but this is the first time I have had a proper go at recording it. The main reason is the range of the song (nearly 2 octaves) which is too much for my voice.  By the way, it is my solid-bodied electric mandolin taking the tune not a guitar. Cheers!

Very jaunty Steve - lots of words over a wide tonal range! It does have that almost Goth start which is great, almost Tarantino-esque - maybe the vocal could come in a little earlier? Solid body electric Mandolin - exotic!

Give my regards to my home town...

Hola @redmando

The guitar in the introduction has the color of a tale, it takes me back to the Middle Ages, a costume ball, masks, obligated steps and movements, lies and half-truths ...
I'd love you put the lyrics so I can understand the whole story.

It was a nice listening.

Hi @Mora Amaro La Loba  - I have typed up the words so that you can follow the story:

Deja Vu

I arose this morning to a terrible grey dawning
And I felt like I’d seen it all before
I couldn’t stop my yawning or my hangover forming
And I wished that I was back in bed

I went out to clear my head – I took the wrong turn instead
And I felt like I’d been this way before
In my head was talking and my feet just kept on walking
And I found myself standing in a bar

“Have a drink on me” the manager he said
And so I sat down next to him on a stool
“You look like you’ve just seen a ghost, my friend” he said
“You’d better get some liquid in your veins”

So I had a pint, then I had another one
It was then I realised that my troubles had begun
I awoke that morning to the terrible grey dawning
That the pub was called “The Deja Vu”

I turned my head around a while, just looking for a friendly smile
I felt like I’d seen them all before
There was no one I could recognise and not a soul would meet my eyes
And I wished that I hadn’t turned my head

I had a drink upon the slate. The manager, he wouldn’t wait
For money he didn’t seem to care
As I was sinking in despair, a barmaid with golden hair
Sat down next to me on a chair

“Have a drink on me” the golden girl she said
And so I sat down next to her on a stool
“You look like you could spend some time with me” she said
“We’d better get some liquid in your veins”

So I had a pint, then I had another one
It was then I realised that my troubles had begun
I awoke that morning to the terrible grey dawning
That the pub was called “The Deja Vu”

As I got up to have a pee the strangest thought came over me
I felt like I’d been through this before
I couldn’t stop the drunken oaf who had his arms around my throat
Oh, I wished that I was back in bed

As the fists began to fly I thought that I was going to die
And I knew that I’d been through this before
He tripped and landed on his face – his teeth were on the mantelpiece
So I went back smiling to the bar

“Have a drink on me” my lady friend she said
So I sat down next to her on a stool
And as I gazed into her face I knew that I was in my place
I’d better get some liquid in my veins

So I had a pint, then I had another one
It was then I realised that my troubles had begun
I awoke that morning to the terrible grey dawning
That the pub was called “The Deja Vu”

@redmando  - super song! Clever lyrics, Liking lines like
"I couldn’t stop the drunken oaf who had his arms around my throat
Oh, I wished that I was back in bed"

The word Oaf really brings  this scene to live. Tarantino-esque like @Tolo  mentioned.

I've never really known how I felt about folk tunes being played on an electric guitar but I don't want that to get in the way of commenting. This is pretty great overall, musicianship, lyrics & production, I would have like to hear you go for it a bit more singing, maybe? Deja Vu is a big one for me, there are certain circles I really need to stop going around at least less often.
You can't go back. You can't stand still. If the thunder don't get you. The lightning will.
