Eight Years
on: October 10, 2018, 21:51:23
Howdy fellers,

I started writing music when I was 16, and generally played songs for campers when I was a counselor. They bugged me to start recording when I was 18,. It's been eight years and I haven't stopped. Now I'm starting from the beginning and uploading an original song every Sunday to my Youtube Channel.

(Which can foreseeably go on for a year and a half with the songs that are already finished at the time of writing this post)

Some of it is gritty, but it progresses, and I've certainly changed. So if you're interested in hearing the development of a musician/bedroom producer, please subscribe or check in when you feel like it.

This week's song is "If We Never Try" from 2013.

Sure thing- @M57

(Who's that?)
Beautiful girl sitting all alone at a table
Wanna say hi, but I don't know if I'm gonna be able
I've been here before. I was looking for more and
She's way too pretty to be sitting alone,
Yeah She's way too pretty to be sitting alone. Well

Maybe she's been waiting for someone
And maybe tonight that someone is me
My heart starts racing
And I have to pee
But I'll never know if I never see,
No I'll never know if I never

See this boy at a bar
Staring at a girl at a table
I look in her eye and find myself surprisingly stable
As I get up and I grab my cup
I see she's talking to her waiter, so I won't interrupt
Yeah she's talking to he waiter so I won't interrupt

Well she just sits
And stares at here phone. I wonder how this girl's here all alone.
Well maybe it's that she's a bitch
And she knows she's pretty and she's out of my league,
Well, she thinks she's pretty and she's out of my league,

But she's a beautiful girl sitting there and waiting for action
We haven't met yet, but I've never felt this kind of attraction
I'm gonna introduce myself
Gonna take that girl down off the shelf and tell her
"You're way too pretty to be sitting alone
Yeah, you're way too pretty to be sitting alone"

(ukulele solo) "Hi."

Well maybe she's been waiting for someone
And maybe tonight that someone is me
My heart starts racing
And I have to pee
But I'll never know if I never see,
No I'll never know if I never see this

Beautiful girl, sitting all alone for some reason
I'm a pretty good guy, but then again, it's been a pretty dry season
Beautiful girl, and an OK guy,
"Hey we'll never know if we never try,"
Yeah we'll never know if we never try with that

Beautiful girl sitting all alone at a table
She's beautiful girl sitting all alone at a table
Remember
She's a beautiful girl
But she's sitting all alone
She's a beautiful girl

I like this one.  It's light and kind of quirky. I like how the bass line and the percussion keep the beat just a bit off kilter. That really focused my attention on the uke.

I like this style.....I'll be looking for the others as you post them.

Yeah, there's lots of fun packed into this one.  Your baritone harmonies have a nice density to them and it sets your arrangement apart from others very nicely.  Your choice of uke is a really appropriate way to get that quirky, yet light and fun edge on the song, though sometimes I think it's a bit over done.  E.g. I would consider not having a ukulele solo.  I would experiment with something else.  Vibraphone/Xylophone, classical guitar, steel drums, trombone.  All of those choices would have the added advantage of keeping the listener attentive by changing things up a little.  That single slappy whacky thing in the middle is just a bit too loud and harsh - if it's accenting some kind of joke in the lyric, I don't get it.  Maybe soften it and make it more a part of the mix.

Congrats on a fine and really entertaining song.

Very entertaining narrative style with a kind of off-centre musical treatment that really suits the story and the quirky way you tell it.

Good luck with the video project.  ::thumb::
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Hi @Rewboat ,

Very interesting song and recording. The quirky, hesitant, rhythms fit the lyrics perfectly.

I tend to agree with M57 regarding the uke solo.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I like the tone of your voice and how you harmonize and hold it. Great story and well sung.

@Rewboat  I`m a sucker for the uke and your style suits the treament. I like that rush of words .Its not easy to keep vocals sounding natural with that kind of lyric- you do and the harmonies add a soft feel to offbeat rhythms.
I enjoyed the introduction to your songs :ok: :ok:

@robertkc @M57 @MichaelA @Mora Amaro La Loba

Thanks for listening with a discerning ear! Honestly, a uke was what I had in my hands at the time and I liked how playing a generally relaxing instrument frenetically and maybe even a little ironically sounded, and I've always been a sucker for Brian WIlson-esque harmonies.

If it corresponds to anything, i'd say uke solo was about being slap-happy and a little drunk when approaching the girl, and the way it just kind of dies off and curls into itself at the end has a shyness I find endearing, but god I don't know if I was that clever back then or even thinking that hard about it.

Good notes! Much appreciated.

This week: Beth, You Left (2012)

Lyrics-

Cold words, cold words. I keep 'em fresh to serve you in the morning.
Right next to the eggs in our refrigerator.
You know, Beth you left the fridge open again,
and now a draft is blowing in.

Your shoulder's getting cold, and this is getting old, but
Beth you left the fridge open again.

The pantry light is on, the freezer's open too
The high flame on the stove puts danger around you
But breakfast is the most important bribe of the day
Everybody put the past away.

Hot temper, hot temper. Not to close my dear or you could burn your finger
Right next to the bacon frying on the stove.
You know, Beth you left the fire on again.
Just trying to keep you safe my friend.
Now things are getting heated. I'm to upset to eat it.
Beth you left the fire on again.

The pantry light is on, the freezer's open too
the high flame on the stove puts danger around you
I hate to leave this kitchen in such disarray.
Would everybody put the past away?

"With every meal I serve, I'm saying that I love you.
Each bite you take you know you take a bite of me
How else can I give you all that you deserve?
Just accept the food I serve."

Left overs. What's left over? Take some old junk and heat it up for dinner
Into the microwave, come right out of the freezer:
Are you sure you want to heat those up again?
Do you think we're good to start from scratch again?
Oh no. Beth you left the fire on again.

What a fantastic and refreshing song. I LOVE some of the surprising chord changes. Seriously good vocals and playing.

As you progress with these, watch your tracking levels as there is a bit of distortion here and there.

Re: Beth..

Damn, this is refreshingly good..  Your lyrics are wonderfully woven.  Your playing and singing is engaging.  The harmonic palette you use is fearless yet incredibly musical.  Really, there's very little about the song or arrangement that I could come up with suggestions for improvement ..if I bothered to try.  So I'll move on the recording..

I found the doubled spread vocal to be over-the-top - especially when the one on the right was lagging a lot.  I'm admittedly not a fan of the technique, but I understand it's a thing.

A number of seconds before all those BVs come in, I can hear a ton of built up high frequencies from open mics recording air right before you sing.  Either edit it out, or use a gate - or something.  Maybe EQ it out on some of them?

I'm not necessarily hearing any distortion, and I'm not a professional engineer, but there's a sense in which I feel the mix is not as cohesive as it should be.  I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there are a couple of suspects.. Your vocals all sound close-miced while many of the instruments including the solo instruments sound a bit darker and not so close miced - especially the violin/viola?.  Are you tracking using a lot of different gear and techniques?  Another possibility is that while I think you are using a good amount of compression on the vocals, I'm not sure I'm hearing as much on many of the other instruments.    ..and what about the 2-buss?  Are you using any additional compression/limiting on the master?
