I was expecting some string / violin / cello to come in, and perhaps even some beats kick in towards the end, some more build?

Great thank you for that. Yes I have whole produced version in my head for when I have the time! Definitely some drums in there for me too!

@songwriterlouisem  I wish your song could get more listens, I think it's a sweet song - piano & vocal, not many songs can stand up to just that.

You're a fantastic singer, and the few minor things I noticed about the singing will surely be corrected when you sing the final version. But what a voice.. hello!
I think, just like @Dutchbeat , this song will have more impact when an arrangement builds up tension from somewhere starting in the middle, I think strings, cello, contrabass and even a rhythm section will sound fantastic and dramatic. Keep us posted about the progression!

@songwriterlouisem You know, as @vincent_stewart mentions above, it is quite something to hold a song together for 4:15 with just a piano and your voice. You don't even build with backing vocals, or change the register of your voice. Quite something. Kind of like Carole King. Anyways, you clearly have the songwriting licks.

Very nice @songwriterlouisem - I'm in agreement with @Olbigead and @vincent_stewart it really is a captivating song with just you and vocals.

I'm interested in seeing how this develops if you do add other instruments etc. but this version is also pretty special as it is.

Your voice and the piano makes for a very pleasurable listen. I don't think you need to add a lot more to this.

I'm hearing a subtly sizzling ride cymbal behind this, delicately played as a counterpoint to the piano......maybe some brushes. And cello......

Don't lose this wonderful open feeling that you have now.

The vocal is clearly the star here. You are a fine singer. Your phrasing and the quality of your voice does a great job of keeping us captivated, but only for so long.  Everything else about the tune is nice - the lyrics are well-structured and the chords and melody are fine - but there's nothing going on that I haven't heard before. The changes and melodies are very standard and the piano playing is simple and accessible (nothing wrong with that), but not particularly memorable.  It's certainly serviceable as a rough draft, but as a demo, the song lacks much of anything to differentiate it from thousands of other songs written in Am on the piano.  This is the kind of song that, at least for me, cries out for an arrangement to make it pop.
